tional Guardsman Walter Dowell, of
Madison, Ind., is near death to-day
from a bullet fired by Sergeant PM win
Ball, Company H. of Indianapolis,
when Dowell attempted to escape
after being arrested on suspicion of
smuggling liquor into the National
Guard camp at Fort Benjamin Har
rison.
Ball is held by the police on a
charge of assault with intent to kill,
pending the result of Dowell s wound.

C. E. Henderson, wanted in Atlapta
on a charge of embezzling $600 from
the Imperial Tire and Tube Company,
No. 349 Peachtree street, has been
arrested In Philadelphia. An At
lanta police officer will leave Thurs
day to bring him here.
Henderson was a salesman for the
tire company. He suddenly left At
lanta six months ago and since Pink
erton detectives have been trying to
locate him. They traced him to Jack
sonville and to Philadelphia, and there
lost the trail.
However, his father-in-law lived in
Philadelphia and by shadowing him
they finally caught Henderson.
AUGUSTA. July 24.—Reports from
Columbia, S. C., are that Mrs. Mary
W. Zachry. of Augusta, appealed to
Governor Blease yesterday to not al
low her two children to be taken away
from her in South Carolina, where she
tied with her babies, Frances, aged 3.
and Mildred. 9 months. It is under
stood the Governor did not commit
himself.
Julian J. Zachry, the husband, was
asked for a statement yesterday. He
said that, he had nothing to say about
the kidnaping of the children by Mrs.
Zachry.
Mrs. Zachry stated before leaving
here that she would kill her husband

MARIETTA, July 24. -Jasper But
ler, a white convict, aged 21, sen
tenced for life from Heard County
for killing his grandfather, was shot
and instantly killed by Charles Car
ter, a guard. Butler escaped from
the squad on the Kennesaw road
and was recaptured In a nearby
swamp. On the way to camp he
broke away again. When ordered »o
s'op he kept running. The guard fired,
killing him instantly.
Carter Is under arr«pt charged with
involunta ry manslaughter.
