This was in March, 1901, when a train on the Plant System, now the Atlantic Coast Line, ran fro m Fleming to Jacksonville, a dis tance of five miles, in the remarkable time of 2 minutes and 30 seconds, or at the rate of 120 miles an hour. The nearest approach to this record was made In July, 1904, on the Philadelphia and Reading Railroad from Egg Har bor to Brigantine Junction, a distance of 4.8 miles, in 2 minutes and 30 seconds, or at the rate of 115.20 miles per hour. Notwithstanding the Improvements made in railroads since the Invention of the locomotive, remarkable speed was made as far back as May, 1848, when railroads were In their infancy. At this time a train ran on the Great Western Railroad of England from London to Dldcot, a dis tance of 53.25 miles. In 47 minutes, or at the rate of 68 miles an hour. The record to-day for a long run Is still held by the Great Western Railroad, a trip of 118.5 miles being made in one hour and 24 minutes at a speed of 84.6 miles an hour. A notable long distance run of recent years was that made by a special train chartered by “Death Valley Scot ty,” the California miner.
