Fastest Railroad Time
Although the big: railroads of the Bast are generally
looked upon for holding speed records, the fact remains
that the fastest record run for a short distance on a
railroad was made in the South. This was in March, 1901,
when a train on the Plant System, now the Atlantic
Coast Line, ran front Fleming to Jacksonville, a dis
tance of five miles, In the remarkable time of 2 minutes
and 30 seconds, or at the rate of 120 miles an hour. The
nearest approach to this record was made In July, 1904,
on the Philadelphia and Reading Railroad from Kgg Har
bor to Brigantine Junction, a distance of 4.8 miles, in 2
minutes and 30 seconds, or at the rate of 115.20* miles
per hour. /
Notwithstanding thsHmprovements made in railroads
since the irtventimj^of the locomotive, remarkable speed
w'ag made Wj^rback as May, 1848, when railroads were
In their infanc^^Vt this time a train ran on the Great
Western Railroad of England from London to Didcot, a dis
tance of 68.26 miles, in 47 minutes, or at the rate of fi8
miles an hour. The record to-day for a long run is still
held by the Great Western Railroad, a trip of 118.5 miles
being made in one ho tr and 24 minutes at a speed of 84.6
miles an hour.
A notable long distance ntn of recent years was that
marie by a sperial train chartered by "Death Valley Scot
ty,” the California miner This train left Los Angeles on
July 9, 1905, and arrived in Chicago July 11, making the
distance In 44 hours and 54 minutes, maintaining an aver
age speed while in motion of 51 miles an hour.
