Largest Banquet
The largest banquet in the world was given dur
ing the Paris Exposition of 1889 to 22,000 French
mayors.
The City of Paris was hostess and the mayors
of all the communities in France, large and small,
were guests at the most memorable banquet ever
given.
Nearly a mile of tables were set for the occasion.
Two thousand waiters handled 168,000 plates, and
280 cooks were busy in the kitchen.
In three hours the mayors consumed 264,000
snails, served in the shell; 444 lambs prepared in
various ways; 11,000 chickens fried, with 18,000
pounds of potatoes an gratin.
No estimate could be made of the Bordeaux wine
that was consumed, but the champagne alone
amounted to 33,000 bottles.
