OLDEST TREES'
Thp Dragon trees in the Canary Islands are the
oldest inhabitants of the earth.
Until 1868 there existed a famous specimen of
these trees in Tenerifre, the largest of the Canary
Islands. At the time of Humboldt’s visit, it was
seventy feet tall and forty-five feet in circumfer
ence, and was estimated to be over 6,000 years old.
The GTJANCHES worshiped this tree. They
hollowed its trunk into a small sanctuary. One
night this oldest of all trees was destroyed by a
slight gale.
Certain Boabob trees in Africa are five thousand
years old.
