OLDEST TREE
The Prugon trees in the Canary Islands are the
oldest inhabitants of the earth.
Cntil 1868 there existed a famous specimen of
tlies 1 trees in Teneriffe, the, largest of the Canary
islands. At the time of Humboldt’s visit, it was
seventy feet tall and forty-five feet in circumfer
ence. and was estimated to he over 6,000 years old.
The GTANCHES worshiped this tree. They
hollowed its trunk into a small sanctuary. One
night this oldest of all trees was destroyed by a
slight gale.
