The Lowest Polmt of Lannid
The lowest point of land in the United States is
in Death Valley, California, 276 feet below the sea
level. In the early days this valley was the terror
of explorers and the trail through it was marked
by the bleaching hones of hundreds of explorers.
According to geologists this part of the country was
once covered by a great sea, to which they attribute
the deposits of borax and salt. Reports have been
made at various times about the discovery of gold in
this desert and in 1905 it came into considerable
prominence when Death Valley Scotty, a miner,
made his appearance in Los Angeles and announced
the mysterious find of vast riches in this graveyard.
Little, however, was ever heard of these supposed
riches after the miner had made a spectacular dash
to New York in a special train and spent a roll of
money on the Great White Way in New York. The
mineral deposits of the valley have been capitalized
for a number of years and the valley has not the
terror for travelers that it previously had. In fact,
automobile endurance runs have been made through
Death Valley several times. The heat is excessive
and a temperature of 122 degrees in the shade has
frequently been observed in the summer.
