JACKSONVILLE, Aug. 23—Chief
Frederick C. .Roach, of the police de
partment, lias announced that the or
ders recently Issued to the effect that
the members of the police department
could not take a drink, enter a saloon
or loiter around the doors of cigar
stands and poolrooms, would probanlj
be revoked by a committee consisting
of Mayor Van C. Swearingen and mem
bers of the City Council, ami the Hoard
of Bond Trustees, winch was contem
plating revising the police manual.
The rule In question has never been
enforced until recently, although It has
been a part of the police manual tor
some time. It created much dissatis
faction among the policemen who claim
that their “private rights" were being
taken from them.

Would Gladly Take Place in
Federal Penitentiary.

Declaring that it would give him
the “utmost pleasure" to serve out
the remainder of their sentences, Rev
W. F. Davis, of Detroit, has written
a letter to Julian Hawthorne and
William J. Morton, confined in the
Federal prison, offering to substitute
for them in prison if the law will
permit it Mr. Davis was a class
mate of both Hawthorne and Morton.
“Please forgive my tardiness In not
writing sooner," Mr. Davis writes. “If
the majesty of the law w’ill permit our
Federal Government to allow my im
prisonment during the full time of the
sum of unexpired terms of both your
sentences, kindly assure your captors
that it will give me the utmost pleas
ure to be held as your substitute
until justice is satisfied. In the love
of Christ for you and yours, your
servant in Him."
Cling to Overturned Boat Until Res
cued by Fishermen at
Lanark, Fla.
LANARK, FLA., Aug. 23.—William
Byrd, of Tallahassee, and Miss Leonora
Goldin, of Columbus, Oa., narrowly es
caped drowning when Byrd’s swift little
cat-rig sailboat was overturned by a
stiff wind in the bay off the beach here.
They were rescued by fishermen after
clinging to the overturned boat for more
than an hour. They were almost ex
hausted when assistance reached them.
Obituaries.
Mrs. Sarah Chiton Willingham, aged
87 years, died Saturday at the fam
ily residence. No. 223 South ave
nue. The funeral services will be
held at the residence Sunday af
ternoon at 4 o’clock. The body will
be shipped at 7:45 o’clock to Stock-
bridge, Ga., for interment. De
ceased is survived by one son. \V.

Dublin Boy Under Arrest.
Charged with the theft of “consid
erable money," D. Sessions. 19 years
old, of Dublin, was arreeted Saturday
night by Special Officer E. C. Robert
son. Sessions claims that he was
employed at the Georgia Hotel until
recently.

Charged with stealing a pocket-
book, Herbert Cloud, 25, said to be a
merchant at Austell, was arrested and
locked up Saturday night by Tralflc

old, died at his residence, No. 13
East Cain street. Thursday morning
at 6 o’clock. He was formerly trav
eling auditor for the Southern Bed
Telephone Company, and at the
time of his death was auditor for

pany. Mr. Thompson was past
chancellor in the Knights of Pythias
Lodge and a member of the Na
tional Union. He leaves a wife,
two daughters, Louise and Mabel,
and one son, Luther, and thrift
brothers, A. D Thompson, of Sa
vannah; Luther Thompson, of At
lanta, and Charlie Thompson, of
Thomasville, Ga. He was a mem
ber of the Second Baptist Church
of this city. Mrs. Thompson, for
merly Mary Cain, of Macon, and
family took the remains to Macon

was conducted at Riverside Ceme
tery by the Knights of Pythias.

The first race, the quarter-mile race
for women, was won by Miss Alexn

by Crane, with Dubard second and
Logan third. Evans won the 50-yard
dush for junior members, with Adaii

Little Miss Nora Stirling, who
seems as much at home in the watei
as on land, won the girl's 50-yard
event. Miss J.ydft Nash was a dost
second, with Miss Rambo right be
hind her.
Walter Lock' took first place in tin
100-yard consolation race for men.
The canoe and swimming race was
one of the most exciting of the meet.

Doonan, as the best mermaid.
Many of the sp da tors remained
at the clubhouse for dinner and the

here to-day in a knife duet with
Frank Douglass, another negro. Both
men belonged to the better class of
