CONSTRUCTION NEWS
Work Is Postponed
On Peachtree Creek
Opposition Develops to Use of Con
victs—Roadway To Be Oiled at
Once—Apartment Brings $14,250.
Property owners near the Peach
tree Creek bridge are hoping that
some definite action will soon h£
taken to clear out the bed of Peach
tree Creek. Since it was decided
Saturday by the County Commission
ers not to undertake th e job with
convicts citizens anticipate that day
laborers will be hired and that the
work will go on without much delay.
County Commissioner S. 13. Tur
man declared Monday that Chief of
Construction Clayton and F. A. Quil-
lian, chairman of the bond commis
sion, agreed with the County C0171-
misioners that it would be unwise to
take convicts off sewer work and put
them on the Peachtree Creek job.
Captain Clayton and Mr. Qulllian ap
peared at the last meeting and as
serted that they could protect the
Peachtree Creek Disposal Plant for
the present.
One hundred more convicts are
needed on the Butler street sewer
work, declared a County Commis
sioner.
To Change Peachtree Front.
E. W. Alfriend, manager of the Al-
friend Building on Peachtree, oppo
site the Empire Life Building, has
applied for a building permit to
change store front at No. 97 Peach
tree street at a cost of $360. This
work is to be done in preparation
for the Atlanta Floral Company, Borg
& Erikson, successors, who have
leased the place, and will move from
their present location on Peachtree
just north of Edgewood avenue.
Permit to change the store front of
the Meyers-Marcus Company at 75
Peachtree has also been sought. The
cost will be $700.
Washington Street Sale, $14,250.
The Phoenix Investment Company
has entered into an agreement with
Mrs. Emma E. LaHatte to construct
a two-story apartment house at No.
425 Washington street and to give a
quitclaim on the entire property for
$14,250. The lot is 52 by 150 feet.
Permit for the structure was taken
earlier in the week.
Much Church Activity.
Certain local churches are very
busy at this time preparing for the
completion of new edifices. The
Christian Science Church at the
northwest comer of Peachtree circle
and Peachtree street is perhaps half
completed, the Gordon Street Church
is w'ell along near West End Park,
the Unitarians are expected to start
soon on West Peachtree near Kimball,
and the First Presbyterian at Peach
tree and Seventeenth streets, and the
Central Baptist at the comer of
Cooper and Whitehall streets.
The Central Baptist congregation
nought their 102 hv 160 foot lot over
a year ago for $18,000 and are ready
to move from Forsyth and Garnett
streets. Their present property is
held for $60,000, and the church and
prospective buyers have come with
in $10,00 of a trade on two occa
sions. The# new church will cost
about $60,000 and will have such in
stitutional improvements as a swim-
mnig pool, bowling alley, reading and
rest rooms, kindergarten, etc.
Railroad Development* Started.
People on the west side of the city
are waiting to sfcv result of rail
road activity that has been started in
that section. The projectors in the
Walker Street industrial development
have begun clearing away small
houses to make ready for the exten
sion of a spur track through the rear
of the Walker Street tract to Haynes
street, where it is proposed to put
several large warehouses.
One building which will adorn the
group will be three stories high and
300 feet long, if the plans of the de
velopers do not go awry.
New Subdiviaion Opened.
Oakwood Terrace, a new subdivi
sion adjoining Druid Hill*, west of
East LaJte drive and fronting on the
North Decatur car line, has been put
on the market by the L. P. Botten-
fleld Real PJstate Agency. This Is
known as the Kirkpatrick property,
and was acquired some time ago by
the McKenzie Trust Companv. The
lots are $450 to $1,000, and John N.
Holland will have charge of the sales.
