NEW YORK. Aug. 28. There was fe
verish trading at the opening of the
cotton market to-day and first prices
were 2 to 21 points higher than last
night's close The heaviest trading was
in new crops, which were vigorously
bought by leaders with Southern con

profit-taking on the upturn, when the
market was 3 to 9 points higher than

3 to 7 points above the previous close
AH offerings were quickly absorbed and
the market aRain developed an upward

DAILY COTTON LETTER
NEW ORLEANS. Aug 26.—The map
shows cloudy w-eather everywhere, ex
cept in north central belt, north Ala
bama and western Georgia, where it is
fair. The only rains shown in the west
were in the Galveston-Houston dis
tricts. Indications are very good for un
settled weather, and showers over all
the wetsern ami central States The
heat spell over north Texas, Oklahoma
and w'eRtern Arkansas will be ended to
night by a cool wave from the north.
It looks as if the damage reports from
the western Slates have at last succeed
ed in frightening spinners and getting
them to buy, which has been the aim of
bull speculation for some time.
First trades here were at an advance
of 20 points, easily sooomplishsd by lit
tle buying owing to the scarcity of sell
ers, on the continued sensationul had
reports from the western States Bull
speculation is in absolute control as a
result of sentimental feeling.
Bad reports from the central and east-,
ern States in increasing numbers are’
feared.
A low’ condition report by The Jour
nal of Commerce is expected Friday.
