“A fly in the milk
may mean a baby
in the grave”
In these grim words, the
South Carolina Board of Health
cries a warning to mothers.
Flies bear germs, and a single
germ in a milk bottle breeds a
deadly million in a few hours.
In the long trip, the many handlings
from the cow to your door, there are
so many chances for that first germ to
get into your baby’s milk.
It is only by boiling milk that you
can kill these germs, but your baby
can’t digest boiled milk.
If your'baby cannot have its
mother's milk, don’t give him cows’
milk, indigestible or impure. Give
him the only safe substitute —
Nestle’s is pure, rich milk right from
healthy cows, milked in sunny stables,
purified and changed so that the tini
est, frailest baby can digest it.
It only requires the addition of cold
water and two minutes’ boiling to
prepare it.
Do what thousands of other mothers
have done! Feed
your baby on Nes
tle’s 12 times at
our expense.
We will also
send our book,
“ Infant Feeding
and Hygiene,”
an authoritative
book on how to
feed and care for
babies.

When Lovely Worn an Stoops
to VIOLENCE
H ERE is a thought, penned in kindness
for Mi-Lady Militant, by one who
believes in her Cause, but who depre
cates her methods: The victories of violence
are transient.
Filings done in hate have to be done over.
And she who smears hand-rails with tar,
puts muriatic acid into mail boxes, places
bombs in an art gallery, burns hay barns,
defies the police, and is taken to jail must
face the consequences of her misdeeds, just
as if she were a male man.
If we are to believe in sex equality, woman
must cease to ask for favors, or immunity,
because she is a woman. If men should do
in England what some women are doing, we
know what Miss Britannia would do to them.
Even though the woman wins by violence,
her victory is bought at the price of her
womanhood.
Righteous wrath is often an excuse for a
bad temper. Hatred of the wrong soon
yields a diminishing return.
We become like the thing we hate—aye,
more, we are the thing we hate.
Mi-Lady Militant hates the tyranny of the
male. Granting that this tyranny exists, it
has grown up out of the centuries, and has
been fixed in the ages by usage. It was old
when Jacob bartered with Laban for Rachel,
and was a habit when Ruth gleaned the
fields of Bo az.
To assert that the man of to-day is respon-
She is unloving, unlovely and unlovable
sible for woman’s status to-day, is to place
one’s self on a par with that fabled Irishman
who attacked a Jew because forsooth the
Jews crucified Christ.
While we believe in Votes for Women,
American women have been wise in not
resorting to militant methods.
Fighting men acquire the fighting face.
The termagant grows to look the part.
Her dominant attitude becomesoneof super
cilious contempt, not love. Eventually she
is unloving, unlovely and unlovable. The
fighting attitude, continued, will disrupt any
home.
Carlyle hated the wrong; Emerson loved
the good. Which man would you prefer for
a neighbor, need not be asked.
The persistence of Mi-Lady Militant, and
her perfect willingness to sacrifice herself for
the good of the Cause, is beautiful just in the
degree that you admire martyrdom.
’Ware the willopus, wallopus feminino
And just here please remember that
martyr and persecutor are cut off of one
piece. They shift places with lightning-like
rapidity.
He who is willing to suffer and die for a
cause, will make you suffer and die for the
same cause, if he gets the chance.
Law protects the life and property of
women, but not so much as it should.
This applies also in degree to men.
But to repudiate the law, because the law
does not do all’it should, and resort to an
archy in order to win a legal victory, is not
only playing the part of a minor, it is the
part of a defective.
Harm must follow such tactics, since it
gives in itself a reason why women should
not be allowed to help make laws. The
ability to abide by the law is the test of fit
ness for citizenship.
To shoot up the law, is no better than to
shoot up the court-house.
The fact that a woman is a woman does
not license the crime of arson, nor make
window-smashing part of a holy war.
The McNamaras claimed to be working
for the Cause, but the argument was over
ruled.
Great reforms require great patience on
the part of those who would bring them
about.
Whi n you ask for a voice in the making of
Government, your voice must not be keyed
too high, lest, mayhap, you inspire fear as to
what may happen when you acquire the
power for which you seek.
Equality is all right, and it is at the door.
But the thought of the supreme sway of the
battling termagant tongue makes men
pause.
Flee the fighting face and the shrill fal
setto. Avoid the clang and clash of teapots
flung with prevision. ’Ware the willopus
wallopus feminino!
To win the vote is not all, any more than
to win a husband is the end of the play. It
is only a beginning.
To commit a wrong that right may follow
is at least debatable.
Those born under the zodiacal sign of
Taurus the Bull, should not be allowed free
run of china shops. They who apply for
entrance to your home, bearing the torch of
incendiarism, may well be barred.
Perhaps Asquith is fifty-one per cent right '
on going slow. “Violence,” said Edmund
Burke, “is the weapon of weakness.”
