American Sunday Monthly Magazine Section Why BLONDES Ate Dying Our I N dark cloudy climates, whore the light is not intense or where there is brilliant sunlight for only a short part of the year, blondes are numerous. In countries where there is a great deal of light, where the snn shines strongly, brunettes are in the ! BLONDE j iBRUNETTE j Pigment in hair and skin saves the brunette’s nerves while the blondes are exposed to the deadly “chemical” rays of the sun majority. The reason for this is that the fairhaired and blue-eyed people have less protection against the rays of sunlight and die off more readily than do those whose skins are dark. In America the blonde—of the real, nat ural variety—is becoming somewhat of a , rarity. To a certain extent this is largely due to the fact that recent immigration has been principally from Southern Kurope | where the races are dark in type, whereas a ! few decades ago, immigration was princi- j pally from Northern Europe where blondes ! are in majority. But, after all, this is only begging the question, for it does not touch on In the South the blonde stream of immigration dies and the dark races prosper; in the North the reverse occurs the point why the nations of southern Europe are dark and those of northern Europe are fair. In southern Europe, and more especially in southeastern Europe, there is a great deal of sunlight and but little cloudiness. It is becoming an arid land. The cloudless skii ^ of Greece, and the blue skies of Italy are proverbial. Consequently the Greeks and the Italians are markedly brunette, which goes to show that the darker types survive while the lighter ones—being less resistant— i soon die out. This susceptibility of blondes to sunlight I has been markedly shown by recent investi gations in the Philippines. The reports of j the Surgeon-General of the American army ! show a large proportion of sickness among light-haired soldiers in tropical climates, and a heavy mortality among men with dark j hair, in the Pacific northwest where cloudy conditions occur. Indeed, this is so thor oughly appreciated that officers desiring to take their families with them when on service in the Philippines are urged not to bring their children, if the latter be fair in type. Blondes, moreover, are more readily affected by nervous diseases, and in states where bright skies are frequent over 75 per cent, of the inmates of the insane asylums are blondes. The opposite conditions are j found in cloudy regions, save that the pro portion of blondes to brunettes in asylums and sanitaria is far in advance of brunettes, and that, moreover, there are more dark- haired than light-haired people in the United States.
