The Absolute Eye
('Continued front page 7)
beyond my power to subdue it and I ran
down stairs for a pail of water.
‘‘As I reached the foot of the stairs the
door opened and Blodgin came in with a
policeman.
“‘Arrest that man!” said Blodgin, from
the shelter of the doorjamb.
“The policeman fell back with his hands
before his face. I shouted to them that the
house was on fire and to rescue Schoenberg
as I dashed down the steps.”
Jortin paused and I considered him
shrewdly. The later developments in his
story struck me as overcolored. I felt
rather crusty at having had my sympathy
trifled with.
“That’s a very fine tale,” I said sarcasti
cally. “Pray what prevents your absolute
eye from consuming that patch? ”
“ It’s asbestos,” he replied simply.
"I should advise you to go to a psycho
pathic ward for observation,” was my only
comment.
“Schoenberg’s house was burned down,”
he pursued, “as you may see for yourself,
and he is raving in a sanitarium. Ah!
This terrible eye! What a curse! For
days I spread havoc wherever I went until
I thought of having this asbestos patch.
1 he eye might work wonders if I had any
gift of science, but I tell you it’s deadly dan
gerous.”
I laughed jeeringly.
“Nou don’t believe me?” he asked.
“ W ill you take a sporting chance? ”
I le touched the patch as if to raise it.
“Stop,” I said, “you have some {rick up
your sleeve. You’re going to throw acid
or something.”
“See here,” he returned, still keeping his
fingers at the patch. With his free hand he
reached for a stand of matches and drew it
toward him. Then he tilted the patch at a
slight angle, allowing him to glance down
at the table with his shaded eye. In a sec
ond the matches.with a sharp hiss flashed
into flame.
“Sleight of hand,” 1 said, contemptuously
but without conviction.
“ Very well, then,” he said, “ will you look
me in the eye?”
“Pooh,” I said, rising, “take another
hypo and tell it to Sweeney.”
"You snivelling unbeliever,” he hissed
through his teeth, “look me in the eye, if
you dare.”
I was already half way to the door. I
seemed to feel a hot point in the small of my
back. And as I am writing this my wife
informs me that someone has burned a spot
on the back of my coat.

One cannot help feeling a
grave sense of responsibility
toward women in general. To
those who think and I hold
their number to be somewhat
larger than is granted by cer
tain disgruntled philosophers
— it must be evident that the
time has passed when woman
can trust solely to the power
of sex attraction in herstruggle
for existence. She is groping,
well-nigh unassisted, for other
and nobler weapons, for train
ing, for work, for achievement.
When she finds them, man
will have lost a plaything, and
gained a comrade, a friend.
