The Amazing Effects of Shock 0Continued from page H) Metchnikoff has shown under the micro scope how these chromophags devour the pigment and leave the hair colorless. This occurs very slowly under normal conditions and it is inconceivable how this could be done instantaneously or even within a few hours. The explanation usually given by skeptics is that the hair was dyed and the dye was washed off and under the attending excitement it was not renewed. One pe culiar effect which follows the shock pro duced by concussion of the spine is the development of spinal disease weeks or months after the injury. This happens most frequently after railway collisions. The immediate result of the collision may have been insignificant, the person may have been calm and collected, he may have even helped those whose injuries required immediate attention. After a few hours mental symptoms begin to show themselves in excitement, talkative ness or tears. The next day, or perhaps in a few days, he begins to feel all battered up although there may not be a sign of a bruise. After a week or two, or perhaps after a much longer period, he begins to complain of pains along the spine and this is the beginning of a series of disorders which I finally involve every organ of the body. In some cases there is permanent paralysis of the lower limbs or of one side of the body, sometimes there is a general waste of tissue, sometimes there is a change in tempera ment and impairment of the mind, in some j cases there is a rapid aging of the individual, a middle-aged man becoming apparently an old man in a few’ months. There is another class of cases in which the shock was slight and was followed by a rapid and appar ently complete recovery. After a few months, or perhaps after a year or more, the health begins to decline without any assignable cause, the person becomes nervous, irritable and depressed. He complains of vertigo, headaches, ringing in the ears, numbness, the ideas are con fused, the sleep is disturbed, he becomes emotional and readily gives way to anger or tears, the will-power is diminished and the whole mentality is altered. At the same time he complains of shooting pains in various parts of the body, or there may be a tenderness in the location of the original injury, though the original injury may have been nothing more than a bruise or only a jar at some point along the spine. The appetite fails, physical power diminishes, and one group of muscles or the muscles on one side of the body may weaken rapidly, producing paralysis. More uncommon and more remote in time are epilepsy and in sanity. It took years of observation and the report of many cases to convince railroad companies that a nervous break-down oc curring a year or more after the accident may be the delayed result of the shock— and now the railroad companies are anxious to settle suits before the delayed results appear. In these cases the concussion of the spinal cord leaves one or more tender spots which were directly subjected to the jar, these spots sooner or later break down and implicate other parts of the cord and the brain, and the whole organism suffers. There may be other causes for spinal con cussion. A fall on the buttocks or on the feet may have the same effect as a railway collision. So insignificant a shock as a jump of a few inches, the person coming down on the heels with the knees rigid may produce these delayed results and it is known to have happened to a girl who jumped the rope that way. While the delayed results of physical shock can be readily explained it is difficult to explain delayed mental shock. If there is a pro gressive mental impairment from the time of the shock we can say that the brain was damaged and instead of improving there is a progressive extension of the damage. In many cases, however, there has been appar ently complete recovery and the only ex planation for the delayed results is, that the impression has become crypted and for gotten and it is brought to mind through some associated idea. The peculiar mani festations will then depend upon circum stances which prevail at the moment or upon habit as in the case of the man who lost his wife in the Slocum disaster.
