Nich ols, indicted as the embezzler of thousands of dollars, confidence was expressed by the authorities to-day of their ability to prove that in the ac cused they have a second Cassle Chadwick. Mrs. Nichols returned to Wilming ton to make her home a few years ago following a divorce from her sec ond husband for Incompatibility of temperament. Until the death of Mr. Sands sne received a considerab'e sum as alimony. She was a close friend since girl hood of Mrs Lemassena, who had great confidence in her ability as a financier, and who is now her accuse* All told she turned over to Mrs. Nichols about $27,000 to be invested. It is stated that Mrs. Nichols would pay over to Mrs Lemassena certain amounts at stated intervals, which were supposed to represent the inter est or dividends on the investments. This continued, it is certain, until about six months ago, when Mrs. Nichols suffered a nervous break down and was taken to a s. itarium in the North for treatment. Indicted on Three Counts. An investigation by John D. Bel lamy. engaged as counsel by Mrs. Lemassena. resulted In the return >* Indictments by the Grand Jury a few weeks ago charging Mrs. Nichols with embezzlement in three cases. The amount alleged in the Indict ments aggregated $14,475. The indictment, of Mrs. Nichols created a distinct sensation on ac count of her prominence and high social standing For several years she lived in Wilmington, where her relatives formerly resided, and was recognized as a leader in exclusive social circles of that city and sec tion. She entertained lavishly. She is a woman of charming personality and was a great favorite In fashion able circles in which she moved. Mrs. I>»massene came here from Philadelphia and appeared before the Grand Jury. She has been brought to hard circumstances by reason of operations of her friend, she says. Sept. 9.—The cobweb gown, made of plna cloth, brought from the Philippines, is on view' at the Commercial Museum here. Several stores have ordered con signments of the fabric, which is more diaphanous than voile and more clinging than crepe de chine. DELAWARE OHIO, Sept. 9.—Lll- Man Bell Bogue, well-known author ess. of Atlanta, announced to-day : iat charges of extreme cruelty ^and gross neglect on the part of her hus band, Arthur Hoyt Bogue, a Chicago promoter, would form the baais of divorce proceedings. Mrs. Bogue’s petition alleges she has for some time paid $200 a month rent and maintained an apartment in Chicago and that she has always supported her huaband. She further charges that he smoked as many as 00 cigarettes a day. One of the peculiarities of her hus band. the petition avers, is that he Is addicted to the use of strong coffee. At 5 each morning, she says, he makes his beverage by filling a cup full of a certain brand of coffee. When he travels, the coffee Is carried by him in a thermos bottle. Certain ir religious tendencies also are alleged. The Bogues were married in Chi cago May 9. 1901 after a three- months’ acquaintanceship. They sep arated in April, 1912. Prior to her marriage, Mrs. Bogue did work on several New York news papers and also wrote several novels. Among her best-known works are, "Why Men Remain Bachelors,” "From a Girl’s Point of View’," and "The Un derside of Things." Enginemen West of Chicago Want Raise KAN SAS CITY, MO., Sept. 9.— Locomotive engineers and firemen on railroads west of Chicago, soon will ask the railroad companies to revise their schedule of wages. Ninety-five thousand men will be affected by the proposed movement. The men have Joined in a request that the heads of the railroad sys tems meet their representatives in a conference in Chicago. Senator Hoke Smith To Stump for Adams Atlanta Girl and Young Decatur Business Man Married by Dr. DuBose—On Honeymoon. Julian T. Chase and Miss Mary M. Goodrich—beg pardon, Mrs. Chase — are on their honeymoon Tuesday aft er surprising friends by secretly mar rying Monday afternoon without tak ing even their relatives into their confidence. They went quietly to the parsonage of the Rev. H. M. DuBose, where they announced their purpose to wed. Dr. DuBose called in neighbors as wit nesses and the ceremony was per formed at once. Then they astonished all their ac quaintances by proclaiming them selves husband and wife. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. G. A. Goodrich, No. 801 Edgewood avenue.
