PEKIN, Sept. 12. The existing ten
sion between the Chinese and Japa
nese Governments over demands of
the Japanese In connection with the
killing of three Japanese citizens at
the recent battle at Nanking between
federals and revolutionists was
heightened to-day by a peremptory
note from Toklo asking for arr imme
diate acceptance or refusal. The de
mands include:
Payment of $1,000 indemnity to the
families of the three slain men; sum
mary punishment of the Chinese offi
cers responsible for the shooting; a
public apology by General Chang
Hsun. the federal commander at Nan
king, to the Japanese Consul, and the
parade of General Chang Haun’a
troops before the Japanese Consulate
as a sign of abjection.
These demands are In the hands of
the Cabinet.
There Is a force of 2 000 Japanese
marines at Nanking, and the Japa
nese Consulate there is protected by
a battery of quick-firing puns, while
there are five Japanese warships in
the harbor.

Naughton, the Fmanuel‘County phy
sician who is under ‘lenience of death
for the killing of Fred Handera.
Chairman Davison read the tele
gram without comment and declared
that the commission would not reply
to Dr. McNaughton. The recommen
dation for a full pardon was forward
ed late Thursday afternoon to Gov
ernor Slaton, who probably will con
sider the case for several weeks be
fore reaching a decision. The reprieve
granted by the Governor will expire
on October 5.

Detectives arc searching the city j
for a negm who robbed the home of
Samuel Hawkins, No. 11 Orme street,
late Thursday afternoon and escaped •
after threatening to kill Mrs. Haw- j
kins with a blackjack.
The burglar stole a gold watch (
and some small change, hut over
looked a diamond ring which Mr. 1
Hawkins told the police was In a
dresser drawer In one of the bed- i
rooms. He entered the house by
opening a rear window with a Jimmy.
Mrs Hawkins had been to the mat
inee and returned to her home short
ly before 5 o’clock. As she closed
the front door behind her. a negro
came into the hall from a bedroom
Before Mrs. Hawkins could scream
the negro drew a blackjack from his
pocket and leaped in front of her.
“If you move I’ll knock your brains
cut." the burglar said, brandishing his
club.
Mrs. Hawkins shrank hack and the
negro escaped.
