Candidate for Police Office in Macon Offers to Quit Race for Cash. ALDERMAN TURNS T A BL E “Praying Engineer,” Choice of Law and Order Forces, Com pelled to Retire. MACON, Nov. 29.—A1 J. Smith, who withdrew his candidacy for the office of Chief of Police a few hours , before his election was scheduled to take place last Tuesday night, wrote the letter of withdrawal only because it was disclosed that he had offered to "sell out” to the "whisky inter ests” of Macon for $10,000. This fact Is made public to-day In a statement signed by five men who have been Smith's closest friends and support ers, three of them being Aldermen. Smith, an engineer of the Georgia Southern and Florida Railroad and a prominent church worker of Macon and Valdosta, had been indorsed by j the Law Enforcement League for the office. He was assured of eight of the twelve Aldermanie votes, and his elec tion was conceded, although some men opposed to the law- and order crusade exerted every effort to beat him. Alderman Traps Smith. Five hours before Council was due to meet Smith went to Alderman R C. Haalehurst, one of the four op posing him and one of the two “ad ministration” Aldermen in Council. He proposed to Captain Hazlehurst to decline the Chief’s office if the saloon- men of the city would give him a sum not less than $10,090. Hazlehurst agreed to take the proposition under advisement and to let Smith know at 7 o’clock, Instead he sought out Al dermen Pittman and Riley and com municated the facts to them. The three confronted Smith at 7 o’clock, an hour before Council meeting, and Efforts of Royalty to Suppress Name of Gay Spanish Mon arch Unavailing. Special Cable to The American. LONDON, Nov. 29.—Scandal af fecting: even members of royalty doubtless will be aired In the im pending divorce suit of the Duke of Westminster. The name of Kinr Al fonso of Spain is linked with that of the Duchess of Westminster in the unsavory gossip that is going the rounds of British noblr society. Desperate efforts were made by King George and Queen Mary to avert the scandal, but they were un availing. At first the crowned heads of England turned all the powers of their persuasion and diplomacy and appeal toward effecting a reconcilia tion between the Duke ana Duchess of Westminister. But the Duke was obdurate. He was determined upon his suit for a divorce, and would not be swerved from his purpose. Then the King and Queen put up a fight at the last ditch. They hoped they would be able to stave off publicity. Here, again, they were unsuccessful. The story, with a thousand embellishments and imag- j inary theories, is common talk. The King of Spain is the most prominent figure in all the gossip. The most prominent of the King s counsel at the English court have been retained by the Duke, and this is regarded as certain evidence that he Will push his suit wilh vigor Gossip links the King of Spain and the Duchess of Westminster together i in the story of certain incidents at the last Cowes week, when King Alfonso left suddenly after having made all arrangements for a big social week. I \ would not have sold out to anybody after taking the oath uf >fflce.” Smith at first insisted that he was only seeking to entrap Alderman Ha zlehurst. whom he believed to repre sent the “liquor interests.” In Ihe statement given to the public to-day by Smith's friends who conducted the investigation Alderman Hazlehurst *s “heartily commended for rendering a distinct public service.” The affair has caused a genuine sensation in Macon. Unless Mayor Woodward recedes from his position or the City Council overrides his veto, Atlanta may find herself with a high-class fire alarm system and no operators to man it, and consequently without fire protec tion. The Mayor has refused to rec ognize the obligation under which the new plant was installed, and has held up the salary checks of the six op erators. On Monday he expects to send to Council a veto of a resolution authorizing the employment of ex pert electricians to make an exami nation of the system. The test of strength between the Mayor and Council will be made at Council meeting Monday. The Board of Firemasters has gone on the as sumption that the Council will over ride the Mayor and authorize the payment of the operators and the acceptance of the system. An effort also will be made ;*i Council Monday to pass an ordinance providing for salary raises for fire men, policemen and school-teachers. The scale in the ordinance is» $75 a month for firemen and policemen, with a maximum of $90 for four-year men. School-teachers under the new ordinance are placed at $t>5 a month, with a $90 maximum.
