f \ N / PAUL CARL DOROTHY RUTH DAN HKARSTS SUNDAY AMERICAN, ATLANTA, (IA., SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 30, 1913. Efforts of Royalty to Suppress Name of Gay Spanish Mon arch Unavailing. Special Cable to The American. LONDON, Nov. 29.—Scandal af fecting even members of royalty doubtless will be aired In the im pending; divorce suit of the Duke of Westminster. The name of Kinr Al fonso of Spain is linked with that of the Duchess of Westminster in the unsavory gossip that is going the rounds of British noble society. Pesperate efforts were made by King George and Queen Mary to avert the scandal, but they were un availing. At first the crowned heads of England turned all the powers of their persuasion and diplomacy and appeal toward effecting a reconcilia tion between the Duke ana Duchess of Westminister. But the Duke was obdurate. Ho ■was determined upon his suit for a divorce, and would not be swerved from his purpose. Then the King and Queen put up a fight at the last ditch. They hoped they would be able to stave off publicity. Here, again, thoy were unsuccessful. The story, with a thousand embellishments and imag inary theories, is common talk. The King of Spain the most prominent figure in all the gossip. The most prominent of the King's counsel at the English court have been retained by the Duke, and this is regarded as certain evidence that he will push his suit with vigor. Gossip links the King of Spain and the Duchess of Westminster together in the story of certain incidents at the last Cowes week, when King Alfonso left suddenly after having made .tH arrangements for a big social week. The Duchess was at Cowes with a party of friends. Duchess of Westminster and King Alfonso (below,) who is named in Duke’s suit for di vorce. HE CHIEF WOMEN NOMINATE TICKET. Five hours before Council was due to meet Smith went to Alderman R C. Hazlehurst, one of the four op posing him and one of the two "ad ministration” Aldermen in Council. Unless Mayor Woodward recedes from his position or the City Council j overrides his veto, Atlanta may find herself with a high-class fire alarm system and no operators to man jl* and consequently without fire protec tion. The Mayor has refused to rec ognize the obligation under which the new plant was installed, and has held up the salary checks of the six op erators. On Monday he expects to send to Council a veto of a resolution authorizing the employment of ex pert electricians to make an exami nation of the system. The test of strength between the Mayor and Council will be made at Council meeting Monday. The Board of Firemasters has gone on the as sumption that the Council will over ride the Mayor and authorize the payment of the operators and the acceptance of the system.
