H ARRY RAKISH, the clever lit tle featherweight boxer, Is the man who really gave me my stnrt In the ring In Han FratiClfcco, and it was against my will At that. 1 used to pal around with Baker and Frankie Kdwards ami I began to take a »ort of fancy to boxing because I heard them talk so much about it. Now and then 1 would put on the gloves with Raker, nml of course he lined to alarn me around, for l knew' practically nothing about how to han dle the mitts. Baker kept after me all the time and tried to tell me that there was a good chance for me to break into the fidir-round game 1 thought that ho was trying to Jolly me along, so I did no' pay much attention to what he said Well. I remember one night In No vember. RiOT. we were out ;»i Dream land, In Han Francisco, and the pro motei- was shy of talent lie was stuck to get a boy to go on in one of the curtain raisers. Baker, who was nut at the fights with me, grab bed me by the arm and began tj> talk business to me in a hurry. “Here's your chance, Cleary," hq said. "They want a kid to OH In and it’s up to you. If you win you may make a big hit for yourself, and if you lose, well, what's the difference? You can take a chance anyhow." But 1 was not strong for that. 1 told Baker that 1 would have stage fright, and if I dirt lose all the gang would kit! hie and I would not hear the last of it for goodness only knows how Ion? Consents to Take a Chance. "Well, we ran tlx that easily enough," ••ut in Baker. "We will send you in under.a phoney name. Nobody will know you , Come on now and take a chance I know that you can bent this kid. for 1 have been boxing with you " • Anyhow, to make a long story short, 1 finally fell for Raker's ad view. He rushed me into the dressing room, dug up n set *tj trunks and a pair of shoes forme, and then when nobody was looking, he took me aside and gave rue a few pointers, which 1 never will forget as long as 1 live Harry gave me final instructions as to how I was tf> jab with my left and crops with mv right every time that 1 got a chance 1 just nodded, for l must admit that 1 was very much up in the air when he was talking to me. The linally got me ready and walk ed me up to the ring It was one of the first bouts, the card was late and the gallery was crabbing. 1 can still hear them yelling Bring on tlio.se stiffs! Only a few of the most intimate friends of the lightweight cham pion know how he got the nickname of Willie Ritchie. It was not until he became famous did the world at large even suspect that the great little champion was fighting under an assumed name. To-day he tells how the "Willie Ritchie” was tacked on to him In a San Francisco ring just six years ago, when he broke in and won his first fight by a knockout in the second round. The title holder tells of the incidents which led up to his start and of his fear the first time he appeared before a big crowd. Past encounters between these teams have been hummers, and close scores have been the result. The Atlanta boys have managed to defeat the Bessemerites in the last two games.
