But there are always monstrosities which were not thrust upon us, and for this we should give thanks. But there aVe signs which point to a real cause for thanksgiving, the day of the useful gift has arrived, and this year these gifts are displacing the useless irritations of the past. Instead of the china-dog match holder, we may nowreceive a pairof black silk stockings. No woman ever has a sufficient number of these so-called luxuries. Nowadays a good quality in black can be had for $1.50. There are grades, however, for $1.00 which are very satisfactory, if carefully worn. White kid gloves, long or short, always de light the recipient. Short ones at a dollar and a half, and 16 button length from two dollars and a half up, make a most excellent gift. The new neckwear, either the serviceable washable jabots and collars, or the very smart ruffs in black or colored malines, solves a part of this gift problem. As the pleated malines in all colors can now be bought by the yard, and as it takes but three-eighths of a yard, such a gift will cost less than a dollar. The ready to wear muffs cost from two dollars up. Jabots of linen and lace can be bought for fifty cents up. For the desk in her boudoir a dainty silver or gold mounted fountain pen would be an appreciated treasure. Scarves of all kinds, from the fragile maline to the servicable chiffon cloth, are ever a delight. Such scarves need cost only a dollar, but may cost several. The man who wishes to make presents to his women relatives may give any of the above mentioned articles, but he is more limited when choosing for his friends. He will not go far wrong in sending one of the many lovely fans which are now being shown. Painted or spangled fans, in deli cate colors, cost from one dollar to as many as one wishes to spend. A silver handle for parasol or umbrella is another acceptable gift. A very good one may be bought for five dollars. The crystal ball handles or those of curiously carved wood, representing birds or beasts, are equally fascinating. Where it is possible to give jewelry, there is nothing more eagerly received than the bracelet watch. These are simply enchant ing. The bracelet must be linked, but need not be wide. The watch set in the center is always small and fiat. One can pay as much as one wishes for such a gift, but it need not be prohibitive, as some of the shops show them from $3.50. One of the most practical but acceptable gifts is the hair-brush which has a removable back, a most satisfactory thing when the brush has to be washed. The water goes through the bristles and of course the back is unharmed. Such a brush costs £2.00. If one knows a woman very intimately a book or a picture may be sent but not otherwise. There is nothing more annoy ing than to receive a picture which one dis likes, unless it is a book which one never would read under any circumstances. Among the novelties which every woman loves to receive are the silver bonbon boxes, odd fitments for her desk or dress ing table, novel pieces of china or silver for her tea table.
