ident Marshall to-day ruled that the
Alaska railroad bill will be before the

currency bill is oassed.

William Sparks, who was one of
the best known and most picturesque
pioneers of Atlanta, died Monday

bank directors had offered to raise
$700,000 to keep it open, but Bank Ex

plan. From the attitude of the de
positors it was apparent that a run
would have started if the bank had
been opened.

of gunpowder in the gelatine mixing

here this afternoon.
GUADALAJARA. MEXICO. Dec. 8.
Ayutlo and Tenamastlan. two town*
of the State of Jalisco, have revolted

two towns to-day were driven back in
a fight that resulted in 66 deaths.

GREENVILLE, S. C.. Dec. 8.—
Hand cuffed to Sheriff Rector, J. R.
Blirkley, wanted here on a dozen or
inoN charges of forgery, arrived in
Greenville to-day from Knoxville via
Atlanta. The two had b*»cn hand
cuffed in Knoxville bv detectives*, at
the suggestion of Sheriff Rector, as a
ruse to extradite Bllnkle*- without
requiaition papers. The prisoner was
unaware of the Sheriffs Identity un
til after the train was moving
In passing through Atlanta the two
were detained and would have been
arrested as escaped prisoners but for
the recognition of the Sheriff's cre
dentials.

tions on first-class shipments from

Sound were announced to-day by the
Norfolk and Western Railroad, which
filed its new tariff with the State Cor
poration Commission.
The reductions will give. Elizabeth
City. Edenton and other points in the
eastern part of the State affi advan
tage of 15 cents on flrst-class ship
ments over the present rates, and
will make their rates lower than un
der the Norfolk combination.
Arrests His Guest
As Escaped Forger
MOBILE, Dec. 8.— After being at
liberty eighteen hours. Corbett B. .Sin
gletary, of Dothan, Ala., a convicted
forger, wno escaped from the county
jail here, was recaptured at Mann
Station, fourteen miles from this city,
by FT \v. Snow, a farmer, who gave
the man lodging and then read of the
escape In the newspapers.
A wholesale escape of desperate
prisoners was planned, but was
nipped in the bud by Willis Capell, a
short-termer, giving the plans away.
. MOBILE. Dec. 8.— Philip Leeds, a
prominent business man of Jackson,
Ala., was perhaps fatally wounded on
a Southern Railway train to-day
when a bullet from a revolver, drop
ped by a passenger, struck him in the
abdomen.
Leeds was taken from the train to
a hospital in an ambulance.

NEW ORLEANS, Dec. 8.—Two
were killed and five injured on the
Southern Pacific to-day at Schriever,
30 miles from New Orleans, when a
freight tram broke in three pieces.
The dead are Andrew Collins and
Fred l.anford. oi the train crew. The
airbrake was applied too suddenly.

pending an investigation into charges
that he shot and killed hi* wife. The
body of the woman lay in a cotton field
4X hours. Belcher claims the shooting
was an accident, hut offers no explana

resignation of Thomas H. West as
one of the receivers for the Frisco
railroad and that he had appointed
.fames W. Lusk, of St. Paul, to suc
ceed him. The change is effective
irn mediately.
West resigned Dec ember 3 because
of investigations which .Judge San
born may have to undertake in Fris
co affairs after the Interstate Com-
merce Commission’s inquiry here last
month.

To Die as Trial Opens
NEW YORK. Dec. 8.-Two hundred
veniremen jammed Judge Foster's room
in General Sessions Court to-day for the
trial -of Hans Schmidt, the renegade
priest who confessed killing Anna Au-
mulle.r, whose dismembered body was
found in the Hudson River.
Just before he was taken Into court
Schmidt quarreled with his lawyers
when they suggested that bis case might
he /strengthened if they secured further
delay. The prisoner hurst out furiously:
“Why delay? I killed the girl. T want
to die for It. I’m tired of this cell and
this delay.”
Declaring that the ''biggest busi
ness in the world’* was the training
and conserving of children. Dr. W. A.
Brown, the noted Chicago evangelist,
made an impassioned address before
the annual institute of the Atlanta
Sunday School Superintendents at
the Central Congregational Church

DURHAM. N. C., Dec. 8.—James
Scott, arrested here to-day on a
charge of kidnaping his son. was
taken, with the boy, to Burlington
this afternoon. Scott had taken ttffe
boy from his mother once before and
carried him to Danville. Va. After
remaining with his father for several
weeks, the boy ran away and went
back to his mother. The father again
took the boy this morning at Burling
ton. and brought him here. A mes
sage from Burlington asked for his
arrest, which was made.
The mother has a legal right to the
son’s custody.

Many members of the Knights of
Khorassan from different sections of
the State were in the city to attend
the annual business meeting, cere
monial and banquet of the local tem
ple to-night.
Officers for the ensuing year were
elected and a number of candidates

ashes of Will Buford, shipped to
Memphis by parcel post, were buried
to-day by the side of his dead child
at Capleville. a suburb of Memphis.
The man’s will read that his body be
cremated and the ashe9 sent to Mem
phis by parcel post. He died in Cali
fornia.

Benjamin Ostendorff, of No. 388 Thir
teenth street. Brooklyn, about 55
years old, shot himself over the right
temple In a rooming house here. He.
was taken to a hospital and may re
cover. He would not explain th*' act.
Os-tendorff has a wife in Brooklyn,
where he worked as a watchman. He
had been here two weeks in search of
work.

MOBILE. Dec. 8.—M. SmHJi. a
wealthy Mobile man, and Nicholas
Gould, missing from here, are be
lieved lost off the yacht Beverly S.,
which was picked up wrecked off
Pensacola and towed to that city.
Three others are also missing from
the crew but their names could not
be learned.

William Berryhill, aged 52. chief en
gineer of the Huntsville tire depart
ment. died to-day of pneumonia and
complications. Four sons survive
him. His wife died three months ago
to the day. .

James Campbell Can trill, wife of the
Congressman from the Seventh Ken
tucky District, died at Georgetown, near
here to-day. She was well known in
Washington and throughout the South.
She had suffered a year from tubercu

Lloyd, of Chapel Hill, answering the
advertisement and investing $250 for
a half interest in a branch of the
Buffalo Sales Company. Investiga
tion, it is said, showed there was no
such company, and Lloyd then made
his charge. Later Best was released,
after refunding the money.

account of a shortage of funds, prac
tically ail road and bridge building
work in Greenville County will have

MEMPHIS. Dec. 8.—Maurice Spain,
aged 35, went hunting and intended re
turning to Memphis by beating bis way
on a freight train. He fell under the
train and was killed.

A writ of mandamus, requiring the
County Commissioners to show cause
why they should not ca.ll a “wed” or
“dry” election, and returnable on De
cember 18, was secured from the Cir
cuit Court and served to-day.
The petition of "drys" for an elec
tion was recently denied upon alle
gation of “wets” that it bore insuffi
cient names.
REGISTER POSTOFFICE BURNED.
STATESBORO, Dec. 8.—Burglars
robbed the postoffice at Register, ten
miles from here, and secured $100 in
cash and $300 in stamps. No clew
has been found.

Kendrick, one of Dallas County's
wealthie st citizens, a resident of Mas
sillon, stricken with paralysis while
riding: through Selma in his automo
bile Sunday afternoon, and was
rushed to a hospital, died to-day.
This was the third stroke Kendrick
had suffered.

SUMTER, S. C. Dec. 8.— Mose
Deas, a negro, shot and killed Crum
