Southern Anxious to Lease. Members of the Western and At lantic Railroad Commission of the* State Legislature are in Chattanooga rhutsday investigating the Chatta nooga terminals and other Tenne-- eeo property of the State road fol lowing a meeting held in tit.; Sta’e Capitol Wednesday. It virtually was decided at Wed nesday’s meeting: that whatever road 13 ffiven the control of the Western and Atlantic will be required to dou- ble track the lin^ from Atlanta tc Chattanooga, and that in order to se cure this improvement the lease will have to run for a longer period tha Jieretofore. hether this arrangement meet with the approval of the Nash ville, Chattanooga and St. Louis, the present lessee of the road, and which, it is understood, desires a renewal, is not known. Southern Anxious to Lease. It is generally understood, however, taat the Southern is anxious to lease the line and is willing to double track the road on condition that the lease j un for a long term of years. The commission has not yet been j able to obtain any definite figures on ! the cost of double tracking the roa*l. ' Chairman < iunbj Jordan pi ■ sent< d a letter from Vice President H. D Spencer, of the Southern Railway, who stated that he cost of the im provement could hardly be estimated successfully until a survey and report bad been made by a competent engi neer. Mr. Spejicer. however, stated that the last .double tracking Southern system did. from Chatta- j nooga to Meridian, Miss., cost $30,000 a mile, while the cost of double track- j ing the line from Atlanta to Gaine ville ran from $30,000 to $80,000 oer j mile. Rased on these figures, rbout $r»0,- J 000 a mile is considered a fair ave r - j age for the cost of double tracking \ the Western and Atlantic* Possibility of Sale Suoqestion. Mr. Jordan told the other members : of the commission that certain que‘ - | tions should be asked any road that j applies for a lease of the State line, which indicate the possibility of the j commission recommending the sale of j the property when it makes its report ; to the Legislature. The roads, he declared, should be i asked how much they are willing to ! pay for the right of way, how much 1 they will pay for the road with the ; properties not necessary for the op- ! oration of the road taken out, and also ! bow much they will be willing to pay ! for the Atlanta terminals on the plaza I system proposed by the Atlanta | < Chamber of Commerce. ■» Only six members attended the Wednesday meeting and made the j trip to Chattanooga. They were j Chairman Gunby Jordan, Senator M. (Tarver. Representatives L. R. Akin, Alvin T7. Greene, E. D. Cole and Hen ry J. Fullbright. NEW YORK, Dec. 11.—A reward of $1,000 to-day was offered for the safe return of Miss Jessie McCann, the missing Brooklyn society girl, or for the arrest and conviction of persons responsible for her absence. Upon the theory that the girl had met with foul play police boats were kept cruising along the sea wall in Coney Island and through Sheepshead Bay. Thomas G. Gleason, whose daugh ter is a friend of Miss McCann, made public the offer of reward and the wording of the offer indicated that the theory that the missing girl fell victim of white slavers perhaps work ing with the poisoned needle has not been abandoned. Harrison McCann, brother of the missing girl, to-day admitted that his sister received a letter on the morn ing of her disappearance and that she wept over it. but he declared it was, i from a girl friend. Her disappearance has recalled the j mystery of Dorothy Arnold, who van ished in a similar manner a few years ago and never was found. 4,000 Rail Hands Laid Off on Slack Business BALTIMORE, Dec 11.—Due to a gen- ! eral falling off in business, the Balti- I more arid Ohio.
