Early morning pedestrians saw one frightened negro dash up Richmond street and another up Martin street. Swerdlin was clone behind, brandish ing the butcher knife. A death threat made several weeks ago to Policeman J. VV. McWilliams furnished a clew for the detectives Thursday in working on the myste rious attempt to assassinate McWil liams at his home in East Atlanta just ■ before he came to work early Thurs- I day morning. | A business man is said to have ut- ; tered the threat against the officer He was placed under surveillance as soon as the story of the incident was told, and an arrest is expected if the facts are found to bear out the suspicions of McWilliams and the detectives. Thought to Bear Grudge. The business man is reported to have threatened to “get" McWilliams if it took the rest of his life. An arrest in which the patrolman partic ipated is understood to have been the cause of the remark The patrolman went to nis back j porch about midnight. As he leaned over a basin in washing his face he found himself looking light into a re volver thrust through the porch rail ing. Fired on Twice. At the same instant he was deaf ened by the report of the revolver, and a bullet whizzed by his ear. He started back, and the revolver clicked again, but missed fire. McWilliams rushed into the house to get his pistol, and returned just in time tc see his would-be murderer jump the fence. Before he could take aim. the mysterious person disap peared. He. doesn't go in for the tortoise shell or the gold-rirnmed kind, but uses just a plain round glass attached to one of those chains that snap up like a window shade. The President “pulled” this new acquisition on a group of Washington correspondents when they called on him the other day. His attention was called to a message on his desk, and he wanted to read it. Doctor Acquitted of Perjury in 2 Minutes — CHATTANOOGA, TENN., De, 11. j Dr. H. O. Null, county physician, was acquitted in criminal court upon a charge of perjury, after the jury had been out two minutes. The charges arose from an investi gation of the treatment of prisoners at the workhouse, the State asserting that the physician testified falsely as to the nature of injuries which re sulted in the death of a convict.
