which the directors themselves per

Hioh Officials Named.
Chief of Police Reavers and his
sc. ret ary. W. T. Morris, have en
larged their fund of religious knowl
edge within the past few weeks.
A newspaper man with a propen
sity for religious arguments left a
copy of the Koran, the Mohammedan
Bible, in the <-briefs office, the other
day. and after Mr Morris got through
reading it h<* turned it over to the
chief and the rhi**f read it. from the
creation of man from clots of blood
down to tin aura about the sow. And
Then the chief locked the book in the
bottom drawer of bis desk so none
of his men could read it. for there
are passages in the Koran that con
flict with some of the chiefs most
positive ideas and declarations.

Russell H. Osborn came down from
Quincy, Ill . one day last week and
took a position with the Southern
Mortgage Company. He walked from
tic- Ansley Hotel to Five Points, back
up Peachtree to the Piedmont, and
then back down Peachtree and
Whitehall to Mitchell street. And
then of eourse. he joined the 200,000
other people who chuckle with pride
when you mention Atlanta, and who
will g«» without their dinner to ex
plain why Atlanta is the greatest city
on earth. Mr. Osborn has been here
now five days and vows vehemently
that he is a first-class Atlantan from
the tips of his fingers to the tips of
his shoe.
"For.” he says, "you've got to boost
the blessed town after you’ve been
here five minutes, i never saw’ such
a bunch of boosters in my life; ev
erybody's doin’ it all the time Which
Is all right and proper. because
they've got something worth boost
ing.”
Take it from us, who used to know
Mr. Osborn in Illinois, that he was a
li\ wire in his home town, and if he
boosts Atlanta like he did Quincy—
Atlanta's going to get an awful lot of
first-class and productive boosting.

commander-ln-chief of the Atlantie
fleet reports that at 3:45 a. m., De
cember 11, the starboard main shaft
of the Vermont was broken and that
in consequence several of her com
partments were flooded. The skin of
the ship and the propeller crust ap- |
peared uninjured after an investiga
tion by a diver, an*d the shafting and
propeller were not lost.
"The position of the Vermont at
p. m., December li. was latitude 35.41,
longitude 52.24, 1,200 miles from
Hampton Roads and 600 miles from
Bermuda. They should arrive it
Hampton Roads about December 17
or 18. The commander-in-chief
states there is no cause for anxiety.”
