Prisoners Unaware
Of Fire at Station
Prisoners at the police station did not
learn until Tuesday morning that the
city prison hod been afire Monday
night. Great excitement was caused by
the blaze and every downtown company
of the fire department responded to the
alarm, while u great crowd gathered.
The blaze started In an anteroom of
the detective department on the third
floor, a box filled with newspapers
catching fire from a gas heater. Th<
door to the room was closed, and when
it was opened by one of the attaches of
the department a great cloud of smoke
burst forth The blaze was extinguished
before the arrival of the firemen.
Bank to Take Care of
‘Stocking Depositors'
CHICAGO, Dec. 16 The only bank
in Chicago possibly the only one In the
world-—where women depositors are ac
commodated with a sheltered place in
which to remove currency from its tra
dltlonal hiding place was opened in this
city to-day.
Thu Citizens' Bank of Lakevlew. a
North Shore suburb, has a room fur
nished for this purpose.

For Good Post Roads
WASHINGTON. IVo. 16 A Federal
appropriation of $25,000,000 to »>«• spent
for good post roads, with an equal ap
propriation by tile several States, is
proposed in a bill introduced in the Sen
ate by Senator Swanson, of Virginia.

at 9:30 o'clock Tuesday morning. Dr

The session will last three days. A
social feature, including theater par
ties, lias been arranged for each
evening, while an automobile tour to
the points of interest around Atlanta
Is also on the program. The women
members of the families of visiting
surgeons will be entertained at a
luncheon at the Piedmont Driving
Flub Wednesday.
The sessions will be free from dis-
c usslons of other than important work
of the convention. The president's
opening address was on a technical
wubject. Dr Brown used a number
of interesting lantern slides in this
talk.

Held Here as Slaver
John B. Sellers, a Banks County
farmer, Is being held in Atlanta by
J. L. Baley. local representative of
the^ Federal Department of Justice, on

Columbus some time ago. Sellers was
arrested in Texas and brought to At
lanta Monday.
The charge is that be eloped with
Susie Coker, a 17-year-old girl, who
resided with his parents in Banks
County, last October. Sellers was
married and had four children. He
lived on a farm adjoining his father’s
plantation, and elojn*d in an automo
bile at night.

Council From Second

< bant, is the new Councilman from the
Second Ward, having been elected Mon
day afternoon by the general Council to
succeed Thomas I. Lynch, who has
moved to another section of the city.

I Corry. a 17-year-old youth of 237 Cen
tral avenue. Is in the county Jail on a
charge of larceny in connection with the
theft Saturday night of a now Hudson
automobile belonging to Howard W.
Pattillo.
Corry was arrested in a drug store in
East Atlanta early Saturday night He
had driven the machine there and when
arrested denied that he had stolen it.
He charged that another youth had told
him he might run the car until 11
o'clock.
Women Join Move
For New City Park
Women < f the Fourth Ward are plan
ning to support Councilman Claude L
Ashley’s move to purchase the old
Ponce Del^eon amusement park for a
city park and playground. They will go
before the new Finance Committee to
urge that an appropriation for its
purchase be included in the 1914 budget.
Councilman Ashley secured at least
a nominal approval <>f the purchase from
Council Monda> when a resolution of
iiis providing for the appointment of a
real estate agent to negotiate with the
Georgia Railway and Power Company
for a purchase price. W. A Foster, of
the firm of Foster & Robson, was named

Free to School Children.
Another free concert to the school
children of Atlanta will be given this
afternoon. It is expected that many
thousand girls and boys will be at
tracted by the special French pro
gram. the feature numbers of which
will be Gounod’s "Faust” and "Mig
non.” Tickets will be distributed at
the schools free to the children, j
Adults will be charged the regular
admission price of 25 cents.
The free concert Monday afternoon j
to the children filled the Auditorium
with five or six thousand boys and
girls who were delighted with the i
band music.
Prec eding the concert Charming El-1
lory, head of the band, made a short
address on the difference between the j
school children of Europe and those
of America.
The night program drew a large j
number of Atlanta’s music lovers.

ture and the thrilling "Carmen” fan- ,

The club drew up resolutious calling
upon the members of the Council to give

heartily indorsing The Georgian’s action
on the matter
The resolutions declare that the city j
is "woefully lacking in public parks, j
but on account of the historic Interest 1
attached to the Mozley property, it by j
all means should be preserved f*r the
generations to come."

DIES AFTER OPERATION.
LUMPKIN, Dec. 16.—John T Patter-
son, a prominent citizen of Lumpkin, is
dead at his home here, following an op
eration.
