It Is hoped to raise at least $3,500 1n Macon A meml>ership campaign will be started In Albany Immediately after the Christmas holidays, and after .he first of the year membership cam paigns will become general over the State Prisoners Unaware Of Fire at Station Prisoners at the police siation did not learn until Tuesday morning that the city prison had been afire Monday night /Jreat excitement was caused by the blaze and every downtown company of the fire department responded to the alarm, while a great crowd gathered. The blaze started in an anteroom of the detective department on the third floor, r box filled with newspapers catching fire from a gas healer. The door to the room was closed, and when It was opened by' one of the attaches of the department a great cloud of smoke burst forth. The blaze was extinguished before the arrival of the firemen. A Federal appropriation of $25,000,000 to be spent for good post roads, with an equal ap propriation by the several States, is proposed In « bill introduced in the Sen ate by Senator Swanson, of Virginia. Banks County Man Held Here as Slaver John B. Sellers, a Banks County farmer, is being held in Atlanta by J. L. Raley, local representative of the Federal Department of Justice, on an indictment of white slavery ^fought bv a Federal Grand Jury in ^Columbus some time ago. Sellers was arrested in Texas and brought to At lanta Monday. The charge Is that he eloped with Susie Coker, a 17-year-old girl, who resided with his parents in Banks County, /last October. Boy Jailed for Theft Of New Pattillo Auto Unable to make a $1,000 bond im posed upon him by Recorder Nash R. Broyles Monday afternoon. C. Frank Corry. a 17-year-old youth of 237 Cen tral avenue. Is In the county jail on a charge of larceny in connection With the theft Saturday night of a new Hudson automobile belonging to Howard W. Pattillo. Corry was arrested in a drug store in East Atlanta early Saturday night. He had driven the machine there and when arrested denied that he had stolen It. He charged that another youth had told him he might run the ertr until 11 o'clock. Women Join Move * For New City Park Women cf the Fourth Ward are plan ning to support Councilman Claude L. Ashley's move to purchase the old Ponce DeLeon amusement park for a city park and playground. They will go before the new Finance Committee to urge that an appropriation for Its purchase be included in the 1914 budget. Councilman Ashley secured at least a nominal approval of the purchase from Count'll Monday when a resolution of his providing for the appointment of a real estate agent to negotiate with the Georgia Railway and Power Company for a purchase price W. The Georgia Methodist Episcopal Church North has closed its confer- i enoe and to-day the delegates are de parting fer their homes. It was decided to hold the next conference at Tallapoosa. Bishop Leete left Tuesday for Wad ley. Ala., where the Alabama confer ence is to be held this week Gounod's ‘Faust’ and ‘Mignon' Planned by Channing Ellery. Free to School Children, Another free concert to the school children of Atlanta will he given this afternoon. The night program drew a large number of Atlanta’s music lovers. Carter, Promoter of Banks, Gets 2 Years News was received Tuesday In At lanta that John H. Carter, who near ly organized a million-dollar bank in Atlanta some years ago. had been sentenced to two years in the State penitentiary for the embezzlement of $6,F>00 in an Ellijay (Ga.) bank's stock Carter was indicted two months ago by a Grand Jury in Ellijay. He lives in Asheville, N. C. The prosecution resulted from the efforts of five banks, of which he at one time had control — the North Georgia Bank and the North Georgia Trust Company, of Blue Ridge; the Gilmer County Bank, of Ellijay; the Bank of Jasper, and the Bank of Dahlonega. 1 TWO SKYSCRAPERS STARTED. AUGUSTA, Dec. 16.—Work has been started by the Whitney Com pany. New York, contractors for the Empire Life Insurance Company’s seventeen-story office building, and the King Lumber Company, of Charlottesville, Va., which will build The Augusta Chronicle’s ten-story structure. Seventh Ward for Move for City to Buy Mozley Tract Members of the Seventh Ward Im provement Club have renewed- Their campaign tor the purchase by the city of the Mozley property in that section for a city park, following an editorial ad vocating this project, which was printed In The Georgian The club drew up resolutions calling upon the members of the Council to give their support to this enterprise, and heartily indorsing The Georgian s action on the matter.
