Reenle Shapiro, a pret ty young Russian immigrant, on I route to the home of Meyer Stein, in Birmingham, attempted suiolde to day by hurling herself down an ele vator shaft in the Seaboard Air Line station here. Her foot caught in the j entranceway and held fast, saving j her life. After being rescued from this perilous position she bit a po liceman severely while en route to jail The girl says she was detained in j New York by white slavers for sev eral months before finally located by relatives. Self-Defense Plea Of Slayer in Macon MACON, Dec. 18,-—Jesse M. Oooner, a Houston County young man, who shot and killed his employer. S. L. McWilliams, a clothing store proprie tor, on November 16, Is on trial for his life in the Rlbb Superior Court to-day. .Witnesses testified that McWilliams thrust a pistol tit Conner, called the >oung man a vile epithet, and subse quently hradlshed a knife. Conner then firing four times. Several of the jury wept during Conner's statement. His acquittal is expected. Business Men War on Spartanburg Tax Act SPARTANBURG, S. C.. Dec. 18.— A number of citizens have called a meeting for to-night to protest against the recent license ordinance passed b\ the new city government. It is claimed the ordinance is unjust to several trades. Many business men are interested In the protest.
