While the street car people were

shutting down the power for fifteen
or twenty minutes early In the morn

rejoiced a packed car out Piedmont

waa "up against it" good and proper
for the day.
"It’s like this.” said he. "Me and
my folks have all been invited out to
dinner to-day, and so we made no
sort of preparations for a Christmas
feed at home. There isn’t a thing in
the house that could be fashioned into
a Christmas dinner, even by the most
expert housekeeper. And now it is
raining so hard, and the day is so
sloppy, we can’t get where we have
been invited—and there we are! It’s
tough luck, I call It. You folks who
think you are in tough luck because
this old car is stalled for a little bit
don’t know what tough luck is. You
should worry! Suppose you were fac
ing a dinnerless Christmas, like I am?
What?"
And about that time the power was
switched on again, and the car ram
bled along toward town.

He walked into police headquarters

"I came to Atlanta from Copperhill,

heard so much of a man’s chances In
Atlanta I thought I could get along
better I would have made good if they
hadn’t expected too much of a fellow.
As it is I am almost starving.’’
