Prevented by action <>f the Hoard of Education from working in co-opera tion with the public schools, the Drama League has enlisted the pri vate schools, and in each institution will produce a play this year, thinking thus to develop the dramatic instinct of the pupils. In all its activities the league will endeavor, as Mrs. Spiker explained, to exploit the work of Southern dramatists, whether prom* I ising beginners or established suc cesses. A step toward attaining recogni tion for Atlanta as the Southern drama center will be a request to the National Drama League that the At lanta league be not forced to accept the verdict of the national Jjeague on theatrical productions, buf that it be authorized to issue its own bulletins on plays that come this way. “We are working in every way, you see,” said Mrs. Spiker, “for the de velopment of Southern initiative and a Southern dramatic art." The Atlanta league will continue its series of readings and analyses of standard dramas, which last year at tracted considerable interest, and which did more than any other one thing to swell the membership. The league has three working depart ments, governed by the junior, educa - tional and playgoing committees. Its officers are Mrs. W. C. Si■ : < r, r. presi dent; the Rev. ' . Mrs. Edward T. Brown. All this certainly will be effected, Mrs. Spiker said, if the league enlists 1,00 ' members. She is hopeful that this number will bo secured. The membership is 600, having grown rap idly during the last year. The first activitv of the new year will be the conference on Maurice Maeterlinck and ‘The Blue Bird,” to be held at the Atlanta Theater Tues day afternoon, when Charles Hamp den. stage director of the play, and Miss Alice Butler, a member of the cast, will be the principal lecturers. Next week will begin a series of lec- Tiire readings by Benedict Papot, a distinguished French student of the drama who will analyze and read the contemporary French dramatists.
