Brittain, State Superintendent of Edu-
applied to aviation. He will remain
In San Diego through January and
his place will be taken by another
expert, who will discus* a different
feature of aviation through a series
of lectures.
The courses are fundamental to the
w hole science of aviation and include
every bit of knowledge from the con
struction of the machine and its mo
tor to it» operation In all sorts of at
mospheric conditions
In the words of Dr Humphreys,
“the army aviator to he taught not
only how to do certain things, but
why he does them. He will be taught
why certain things happen, at what
places in his aerial flight they are
likely to occur and wha. to do when
he meets these perilous moments.''
“Air Holes" Explained.
One of the great problems, accord
ing to Dr. Humphrey s, is in overcom
ing certain atmospheric conditions
recognized as a menace by the bird-
men. Many have met their death by
running suddenlv into what was de
scribed as an "air hole."
There are of course, bo air holes
The phenomenon is explained by the
fact that the different strata of air
move at different velocities and not
Infrequently Tn different directions.
As the source of support comes
from the resistance of the air, when
this suddenly is taken away It means
a plunge dfwnward unless the luck
less aviator is able to recover himself.
