‘Dry’ Leader Calls
Grand Jury'Disgrace’
Dares Body to Cite Him for Con
tempt, as Foreman Threat
ens to Do.
SAVANNAH, Feb. 14.—Following
, the action of the Grand Jury of Chat
ham County in declining to indict 30
alleged liquor dealers, W. B. Stubbs,
leader of the anti-saloon crusade,
branded the jury as a disgrace to
Georgia and defied the body to cite
him for contempt, as the foreman,
i Leopold Adler, threatened to do.
Mr. Stubbs announced he would con
tinue his fight by asking the Superior
Court for injunctions, the crusaders
having been successful in restraining
six dealers from selling liquor a few
weeks before.
The Grand Jury, according to the
foreman, took the position that the
fight of the anti-saloon was a "class
war, waged by fanatics against the
I poor man's club, the open saloon.”
Macon Plans Pension
System for Teachers
MACON, Feb. 14.—Veteran school
teachers of Macon are going to be
pensioned after 25 years of service,
according to the present idea of the
Board of Education. Recently the
teachers themselves organized a mu
tual benefit association to provide for
teachers In their superannuated age,
but the hoard has decided to look aft
er the teachers itself.
Miss Clara Smith, who has just
retired, will probably he the first ben
eficiary of the new system.

Too Much Like Beer
THOMASVILLE, GA.. Feb. 14.
Mayor Beverly put himself on record
this week as being determined to stop
the illegal sale of intoxicants here by
putting heavy fines on those engaged
in such sales
The defendunts all claimed to be
selling only “malt tonic," but the bot
tles, when produced, were found to
look like beer, smell like beer and

DENVER, Feb. 14.—That the Col
orado coal operators would rather
close their mines indefinitely than
recognize or do business in any way
with the United Mine Workers of
America was the startling statement
made to-day by President J. F. Wel
born, of the Colorado Fuel and Iron
Company, during his testtimony be
fore the Congressional subcommit
tee Investigating the coal strike in
Colorado.

way, near Potlatch, Idaho, has been
pumping a mixture of sand and gold
from his well tor a year without real
izing what the yellow particles were,
several persons have taken samples of
