FARMS FOR SALE,
P CLARKESVILLE, GEORGIA. — - ;
© Situated in the heart of picturesque Habersham, within sight
of the Blue Ridge Mountains, lies the beautiful little eity of Clarkes
ville. The homes are ideally grOupml on the many hill-tops, affording
a sweeping vision of distant hills and rich valleys of fertile farms and
famous orchards, delighting the eve with the entrancing vistas.
Little wonder that so charming and attractive a city has be
come a resort, taxing the capacity of its hostelries aitd the hospitable
homes during thé summer months. In recent vears bungalows and
cottages have been bnilt in considerable numbers, as the summer
hontes for the better-to-do tourists. The home-building has just be
gun and it is destined with each succeeding year to continuously in
crease, ;
The topography is such that it lends itself readily to the artis
tie, being suseeptible to the highest attractive development of the
landscape gardener. In fact, many of the yards are broad, sloping
swards of emerald green, with partierres of flowers, bordered with
rare exoties and shrubs, ereations of exquisite designing. :
In the center of the townisa modern brick courthouse, and
around it, fronting on wide paved streets, are many business houses,
comprising a bank, drug store, general merchandise, hardware, ete.
The local hotel graciously serves a growing patronage, providing
fresh, home-grown viands, appetizing and wholesome, (fn\nk('(l a la
country style, and served home-fashion. :
The Street Railway is provided with touring cars and connects
‘the important points. Several miles of cement sidewalks are in ev
idence on the main thoroughfares. The streets are paved with macad
am, overtopped with clay and chert. The municipality has electrie
lights, water and sewerage. * i
But the distinctive feature about Clarkesville is the faet that it
is in the heart of the large and famous apple orchards of Haber
sham. Last year select varieties of these apples were placed in com
petition with those of Oregon, Virginia, New York, and other
States, and consequently, received the highest awards in every ap
ple show, securing eight first prizes and several trophies.
There is no mistake about their superiority in flavor, color and
size. There is something in the soil that gives it that particular tang,
a subtle quality in the sunshine that colors them with a rich, roseate
liue, and the quality of the rarefied atmosphere prohibits the pest or
insect diseases. 'And a singular fact, though these Apples Lands are
1,200 to 1,500 feet in elevation, they are immune to frost, and conse
quently, in the vernacular of the orchardist, “hit” every year.
The mind of the public is not prepared for the statements that
there are now upward of 3,000,000 apple trees, and the owners are
receiving from $2.50 to $6.50 per barrel. It is not uncominon for the
grower to realize $3OO to $l,OOO per acre from a crop.
A remarkable cireuinstance is that the land is so cheap, rang
ing in price from $l5 to $75 per acre, and can be had on terms. The
readiness with which the soil vields to cultivation makes it all the
more adaptable to fruit culture. Little tilling is necessary, and the
use of fertilizers is not essential. ;
Apart from orcharding, the land yields a generous bounty to
the cultivator of cotton, corn, grain, and particularly \'(-g'(‘tzll)l(;s,
which is rapidly developing into an enterprise of vast proportions.
Minerals abound. Several mines of valuable asbestos are now in
operation, and their promotors are receiving handsome returns. Gold
particles are frequently found in placer roeks and along the edge of
running streams. o i ;
'Anmng‘ the notable orchards are those owned by the Piedmont
Orchard Co., who have offices in the Candler Building., Mr. J. Frank
Beck is the president of this tremendous enterprise. This company
has 1,800 acres of land, and has planted upward of 12,000 trees, which
will begin to bear commercially in the next two years.
(larkesville has three wide-awake hustling Farm Land Agents,
who ape stirring to intense activity that entirve section. They believe
in it, are enthusiastic about it and know the facts. They are highly re
spected citizens and. leaders in all progressive activities, The pros
pective buyers will make no mistake in trusting the judgment of
either Mr.J. H. Hicks, The MeMillans or Mr. John Martin.
To sum it up: It’s a charming, idyllic country, pure atmos
phere, delightful panorama of sceni¢ beauties, rich in mineral re
sources, good schools, modern churches, cultured people, and the
wealth of an empire in the fertility of her farm and orchard lands, A
place to live in contentment, plenty and health, and that has a fu
ture, undeniably greater than any other section of the South.
