A imagine, as others also have
sald, “You never can tell.”
You may recall that a few weeks
a2go I told you there were some rather
unusual eircumstances connected with
the “rumered” engagement of a cer
tain very young couple. The youthful
couple were Miss Nina Jackson and
Henry Greena. Following are the un
usual circumstances, so far as I know
them:
Miss Jackson announced the en
gagement in due form, and it looked
just like any other engagement until
the alleged bridegroom called up the
society editor by telephons, and, in a
voice redolent of soncern, denied that
he was engaged.
While he was denying it, the other
talephone rang, and there was Miss
Jackson, insisting, with equal fervor,
that the engagement was “on.”
This was the first of a serles of
affirmations and denials that kept the
‘society editor (she tells me) in a per

their lives befors had such a play

The last meeting fell to Mr. Davi

arranged for their amusement. Then
along came Mrs. Davison and put a
finger in the pile. She invited in a
number of the very prettiest girls of
her acquaintance, and befores the

fell in" with the spirit of the affair,
and I understand that it was the most
guccessful meeting the club has ever
held. I wouldn’'t be at all surprisad
to hear at any moment that their lit
erary club had been turned into a
dancing affair f.or 'gm:d and all.
SAW a costume at one cf the clubs
| the other aftermoon that even in
this day of startlers was really
deserving of notice. The top was on
the order of a basque, and buttoned
plainly from throat to waist, where a
broad sash held it in quits loosely.
The skirt was plaid and very closely
resembled a Scotch kilt, though it
wes a little longer, and it was topped
off with a tiny little hat with a bright
feather. Befors anyons could sup
press him, one of the men in our par
ty remarked that it was “even Lauder
‘than Harry,” but I think that the
‘truth was told more nearly when
‘someone else said that she looked as
?!t she had been picked befors she was
ripe.
