Elsie Janis N
Death in River
“EFisie Janis growned!” This was the
| exclamation of horror that came from
the lips of the rest of the mmrny as
they stood upon the banks of the river
wherein the plucky Ilittle woman had
plunged while making one of her first
pictures, "Bonnln Search of a Thrill™
Fortunately Miss Janis overcome the
conditions which threatened for some
moments to send her to her doom. In
this scenario, written by herself, Miss
Janis—disguised in boy's clothing—
jumps into a canoe to escape the pur
suing officers of the law, but in her
hurry the canoce, in midstream, upsets
and she strikes out for the opposite
shore
Miss Janis, not realizing how clothes
would lm'»e&e her swimming, sank in
the struggle. Her boy's coat closed over
head, nearly smothering her, binding
her arme «n that she could not swim,
end the terrified m'oug on shore stood
paralyzed, walting lor her to come up.
“It was the narrcwest escape of my
life,” sald Miss Jani: afterward, as she
explained the accident. “lI wasn't
frightened, but was simply wondering
how I could possibly extricate my arms
80 as to strike out, \not spoil the pleture,
and, incidentally, not to drown.”
‘Movie' Ki
Bar ‘Movie' Kisses
Kansas City censors have decreed that
“movie’’ kisses shall not be more than
three feet long—not on the lips, but on
the screen.
The censors say three feet of film is
enough for any kiss. Some films have
kisses that are thirty feet long. But
the censors say they will have no more
of those “long-drawn-out, caressing,
cuddHMng osculations.”” They must be
“shortened’” or they can’'t be exhibited.
