Governors .of South
Invited to Reunion at
Confederate Capitol
RICHMOND, VA., April 7.—What
likely will be the last reunion of Con
federate veterans in the Confederate
Capital will be held here beginning
June 1. Invitations to the Governors
of all the Soutnern States were sent
out to-day by Governor Stuart of Vir
ginia.
Features of the reunion will be the
laying of the corner stone of the
monument to General T. J. (“Stone
wall”) Jackson and the dedication of
the Confederate Memorial Institute.
The invitation to the Governors said:
“In all human probability this will
be the last reunion of Confederate
survivors to be held at the Capital of
the Confederacy. It is, therefore,
more appropriate and seemly to have
gathered here representative officials
of all the Southern States as partici
pants in an event which will mark
the pride we feel in our heroes, living
and dead.”
Sunday Dismayed
Over Collections in
Paterson Revival
PATERSON, N. J.. April 7.—Billy
Sunday will have to “go some*’ to
wive Paterson, for the residents of
this thriving industrial town have
disappointed the rapid-fire evangelist.
“Paterson is not as enthusiastic as
Philadelphia, because New Jersey is
not as enthusiastic as Pennsylvania,”
said Mr. Sunday to-day.
“But communities differ all over
the country. Ohio is more enthusi
astic than Pennsylvania, and Iowa is
more enthusiastic than Ohio.”
Thus far Mr. Sunday has collected
only $2,231, whereas the new taber
nacle where the services are being
conducted cost $14,000. Mr. Sunda>
expressed the ardent hope that Pater
son would “warm up” before he call
ed for “trail hitters.”

NEW YORK, April 7.—“Liverpool
has been the chief supporter this morn
ing and I believe the market will ease
ofT after they close," observed Burnley.
“It took months to get this crowd bull
ish and now thev <vm’t see anything
else." %
* * •
Savannah. Ga., wires: “Backward
spring is being coaxed by farmers in
this section. Men at the plow wear
overcoats, gloves and overshoes. There
is a great revival of the movement to
grow everything at home. Cotton acre
age will he cut in half, while oats and
corn crops will be materially increased.”
• * *
Hayden, Stone & Co.: “The convic
tion that large quantities of cotton are
being used for war purposes and the be
lief that less cotton will be planted and
grown this year than for several years
past prevented short selling. While
sentiment is growing more conservative,
the market itself still continues un
changed.”
• • •
Included in yesterday’s ocean freight,
charters was a cotton steamer to sail
from Wilmington, N. C. f td Havre this
month.
• • •
Recent sales of standard drills to In
dia for April-May shipment amount to
aboui 3,000 bales.
* • •
M. D. Burnley expressed himself thus-
ly yesterday: “Believe this is high day
until nfter planting season Is com
pleted.”
• * •
Mail advices from Bombay report
shippers and local mills good buyers of
India cotton.
• • •
A Goldsboro, N. C., correspondent
writes Weld & Co., that sales of fer
tilizer for the season will probably not
exceed 40 per cent of last year and that
the acreage in North Carolina will be
reduced from 15 to 20 per cent.
• • •
There was a better demand for the
actual at Liverpool to-day, with sales
of 10,000 bales at an advance of 10
points. The weather over the belt yes
terday was generally clear, with the ex
ception of showers in the extreme
southwest. Foercasts are for unsettled
with probable showers to-day and to
morrow. We would not follow the ad
vance. but would accept profits oh
“long” cotton.—E. F. Hutton & Co.
• • •
NEW ORLEANS. April 7.—Hayward
& Clark: “The weather map very fa
vorable: shows fair In east Arkansas
and west Tennessee, cloudy over the
rest of the belt; warmer generally; some
rains in southwest Texas. ’
• • •
The Times-Picayune says: “Though
the speculative undertone of the cotton
market is unmistakably bullish, there
are certain signs which no conservative
bull can alTord to disregard. For ex
ample, exports are beginning to shrink
and to an extent that bodes ill for the
immediate future, at least At the same
time all reports indicate that consider
able quantities of the actual stuff are
headlne for the rings and it is an open
secret that considerable quantities have
already been hedged. This process ia
perfectly natural where one considers
the big premiums and the lull in the
foreign demand. But do the people who
absorb the hedges know precisely what
they absorb? That is the question.
Of course hedged cotton will exert no
pressure, so olng as the premium lafits,
for there is a handsome profit in carry
ing from month to month and nobody
wants to let a good thing go. But a
a short interest of this kind is a short
interest In name only and can not be
stampeded by lurid stories about crop,
nor by confident prophecies of peace.”
