To Golf Playing,
Evans Declares
Star Player Tells of Training That
Can Be Secured From Vari
ous Indoor Devices.
By “Chick” Evans.
O F the making of golf inventions
there is no end, and as a con
sequence almost every man can
learn the golf stroke and keep his
muscles In practice. ’time was when
only the man who belonged to an ex
pensive private club and had the use
of a good many acres of land could
ever hope to become a golfer; now a
tiny spot in one’s back garden or on a
balcony, or the rug in one’s front par
lor can provide a pleasant taste of
golf, and a fair training for the real
thing. /
These thoughts were brought home
to me every time I practiced putting
last winter with one of the numerous
disks now on the market, and they re
ceived special emphasis when I look' d
over a new contrivance put out by i ia
Golf Shop people. I have seen some
thing of the kind before, but this h is
several new and distinguishing fea
tures. Primarily it is a machine for
accurately measuring the distance
that a ball is driven, or, to be more
exact, it registers the amount of force
used in the stroke accurately calcu
lated in distance, for the hall itself
never leaves the cord to which it s
attached.
The outfit consists principally of a
mat, a registering machine to which
a ball is fastened by a cord. It can be
set up anywhere, out on the lawn In
summer or on a back porch or in the
house in winter. A golf course map
goes with it, a net for indoor golf and
a putting disk. It is the driye-regis-
tering machine that appeals to me,
however, for it seems to be an excel
lent exerciser even for the man who
does not expect to play golf, and com
ing handy if he does.
When I consider my own crude at
tempts to practice golf during the
winter in my attic, or in my back
yard when I could not get to a golf
course in summer, I am simply
amazed at the opportunities and ad
vantages the present-day golfer en
joys. More than any other game,
golf is dependent upon properly
trained muscles, and no knowledge or
theory can take the place of such
training.
Excellent as inventions are, they
are but a preparation or makeshift
for the real game. For there is some
thing in the sweep of green and fair
way. in gayly waving flags and
yawning bunkers, and the arrowy
flight of a little white ball through the
air. that thrills and calls when the
spring days come.

It isn’t often that a pitcher annexes
no-hit contest at the start of the
I season as did Rube Marquard. It usu
ally requires the work of a few months
to put a hurler into that form.
* * *
McGraw’s pitching staff looks hettpr
with every game.' “Pol" Perritt may
get an opportunity to show his brand
of goods next, and the Old Master also
Is ready to work.
# * *
Bill Donovan was compelled to start
the season with a crippled pitching
staff. Caldwell was called away from
Washington and Keating also is indis
posed.
• * +
Home Run Baker 1s still among the
missing, but Larry Lajoie is on Con
nie’s line-up, so the opposing pitchers
are not likely to have a picnic at, Shibe
Park.
* * *
We can not recall Billy Sunday’s bat
ting average in the National League,
but it is said that he bats .300 In Dun s
and Bradstreet’s League.
» * * •
Marcan is having a great deal of
trouble with his Little Rock aggrega
tion. The hustling second sacker has a
tough job ahead trying to whip his
players into a winning team.
* * *
Jim Bagby should win many games
for the Pelicans this season. The big
right-hander showed much stuff in his
game against the Crackers here.

the season yesterday afternoon. 5 to 2.

field: Arlington, Johnson and Fudge.
GENE DELIVIONT IS WINNER.
MILWAUKEE. April 24.—Gene Dei-
mont. of Memphis, defeated Mike Flynn,
of Chicago, In ten rounds.
Townsend, Hardgrove, Gudger. Dent,
Thompson, Browning, Robertson, Bagby.
Johnson, Bernard, Keeley and Weaver
are some of last season’s veteran hurl-
ers who are with Southern League
teams this season.

Second base appears to be the Crack
ers’ weak spot this season. Unless Otto
Williams takes a sudden spurt Bill
Smith will have to get busy and get a
capable man around the keystone sack.

If Tullos keeps up his great work
around the hot corner he will be con-
sfderd the “find" of the Southern
League youngsters. He handles him
self with much grace and seems to have
the makings of a real star.
