Marguerite Clark, Dustin Farnum and
Other Noted Stars on Scieen This Week
Has New Role Monday in “The
Sister of Jose"—Other Big
Features,
- Three of the Reason's most preten
tious picture offerings are scheduled
for the Grand Theater this week
The first is Marguerite Clark, the
j* bewitching queen of the screens, in
L ‘The Pretty .Sister of Jose;” the sec-
u ond is that immortal favorite, Edith
Storey, in the Vitagraph'a most stu
pendous production, “The Island of
Regeneration," and the third is John
Mason in his picture debut, "Jim the
Penman "
Marguerite Clark attains the great
est triumph since her advent into
moving pictures in the charming film
production of Frances Hodgson Bur-
nett’s celebrated romance, “The Pret
ty Sister of Jose." which will be pre
sented by the Grand Monday and
Tuesday. In the role of Pepita, the
title character of the tender romance,
Miss Clark has ample and varied op-
i pcrrtunity to display her inimitable
talents.
"The Pretty Sister of Jose" is an
impressive and sympathetic portrayal
of a subject that has furnished the
finest prose and verse in every lan
guage—love in its tenderest form. The
scenery is exquisite and faithfully re
flects the atmosphere of the story. But
above ail else Miss Clark’s gifted In-
* terpretatlons of the capricious Pepita
, will be recorded as one of the most
notable film characterizations ever
presented
“The Island of Regeneration" Is one
of the Rev. Cyrus Townsend Brady's
classics. It will go down Into history
. as one of the most immortal film
■ achievements of the age. It Is cer
tainly the most pretentious offering
staged by the famous Vitagraph stu
dios ihe picture required practically
half a year in the making.
The leading role Is portrayed by
Edith Storey, the winsome and lova
ble character who has done so much
toward establishing the international
prestige cherished by the Vitagraph
concern. “The Island of Regenera
tion" is, without a doubt, the, season’s
tensest dramatic offering.
John Mason, whose list of legitimate
stage successes is too lengthy to men
tion, makes his initial screen upi>ear
once before the movie-loving public
Friday and Saturday in "Jim the Pen
man," the Famous Players film adap
tation of Mason’s noted stage success
by Sir Charles L. Young.

Takes Lead Role in “The Plun
derer”—Other Big Features
This Week.
The Strand program will be devoted
to magnificent features this week be
ginning Monday and Tuesday with a
Fox Film drama featuring William
Farnum and entitled “The Plunderer."
It is a thrilling romance of the lure
of yellow gold in the Far West. It
has many remarkable features, not
the least of which is the fight scene.
The fight in “The Plunderer” Is the
most thrilling bare-knuckled battle
ever filmed. It Is positively terrific in
Its ferociousness. Farnum, single-
handed, fights and bests a score of
drink-mad and hate-crazed Western
miners. He toys with the enraged
physical giants like an aroused Titan,
as, with his bare knuckles, he ham
mers them Into Insensibility, aveng
ing the murder of his aged friend, Old.
Bells Parks. To get the full realism
of the part, the actor conditioned him
self for eight weeks just as rigorously
as if he had been going after the
heavyweight championshlip. In freez
ing weather he rose at 5:30 a. m. at
his country place at Sag Harbor, L. I.,
and under the stern eye of a trainer
Jogged ten miles over the frozen roads
while his mentor rode at ease in an
automobile. Then came a swift dip in
the icy waters of the harbor from the
dock on his estate; followed a brisk
rub-down and breakfast After a brief
rest, Mr. Farnum spent most of the
morning In his gymnasium, sparring
and dallying with the medicine ball.
In the afternoon came another jog
over the roads, and then a very light
dinner and bed.
On Wednesday and Thursday Cap
tain Mason’s wonderfully amazing
and thrilling tale of heroiem, entitled
“Four Feathers," will be shown, fea
turing the romantic actor Howard Es
tabrook. The story of Captain A. E.
W. Mason's "Four Feathers" concerns
Harry Feversham. son of General
Feversham, who, at a banquet at hi#
father’s house, hears stories of wajp,
death and torture, and fears that when
put to the test he oan not "make
good." But his nature chance*, and
he wades through seas of blood and
wins the martial glory which gives
him the girl ha loves.
