The Sunday American and Georgian
with Hleir usual foresight and progress
iveness, realizing the possibilities of the
squab business in the South, will begin
the publication of a series of articles on
this new industry and also will give the
experience of many who have made good
with pigeons.
The object is to assist those who are
new in the business and those who want
to engage in it, to encourage and foster
all movements tending to the advance
ment of the Industry, and to give ad
vice along all lines—the best birds to
buy, the number needed to start with,
plans for houses and flys; in fact, will
endeavor to teach them the business.
Squab raising has never bad brighter
prospects than the present time. Hav
ing none of the elements of a boom or
fad. the business has made a healthy
and rapid growth, being helped greatly
by the peculiar economic conditions
with which most breeders are familiar.
The Increasing high cost of meats of all
kinds, the game laws ■ protecting all
game and the gradual dawning on the
public mind of the dietary value of the
squabs, are some of the chief causes.
This condition has increased the respon
sibility upon the breeder, and shows him
the actual necessity of enlarging his
quantity and improving the quality of
his product, also reaches him the need
of using better business methods in the
selling end.
The squab breeder is not now at the
mercy of the local market and does not
have to take what is offered for his
squabs. The most enterprising men in
all communities are creating their own
markets. The manner of doing so is
easy, but should the supply ever he
greater than the demand, the nearest
City offers a good market. In New York,
Philadelphia and other big cities, there
are supply men who will make a con
tract with any breeder and take the en
tire output of his lofts the year round
at a good price.
However, the prime object in starting
this department is to encourage new'
members in the squab growing frater
nity. Nearly every man and a great
many women and boys want a few pets
around the home—in fact, the house
would soon cease to be a home without
some attractions.
Especially does the raising of pigeons
appeal to the man in moderate circum
stances. He can not afford to support
a “benzine buggy,” neither can he spare
the time to become a golf expert, yet
he needs bis amusement and recreation,
and will have it to a certainty in some
form or another. The majority of us
have a love for animals and birds, and
the care and attention given them is
not ca'alogued under work, but con
sidered rather as a pleasure and recrea
tion. While quite a few of us have not
the means to indulge our fancy in rais
ing animals, there is no reason why we
can not engage our attention and sat-
tsfv our desires in the breeding of birds
—either as a hobby with the fancy
classes, of as a profitable side line with
the meat producers.
In this connection we should not over
look tlm boys. There seems to be horn
in every American youngster a love for
pets, and he will fight quicker in defense
of his “yaller” pup than if you had
broken his best “aggie.” Your boy has
got to be amused, he must have some
thing to keep him and his mind occu
pied. and it is rather a poor father who
will not try to anticipate his boy’s wants
and either grant them or suggest a suit
able substitute. Keep your boy at home
and he will not get Into mischief, and
in order to do so. give him something
for liis own, let him feel the importance
of ownership and watch him make good.
Get him two or three pairs of good
squab pigeons. Or, better still, “stake
him for enough to start in the business.
Use the old coal house or a part of the
chicken house for the birds. Tf you have
no old building you can use and do not
care to build a house, get an old piano
box and make it do. Go in with him on
a business basis, loan him enough mon
ey to get his birds, house and fly tixed
and feed enough for sixty days. Sup
pose you start with three pairs. rh-e
birds should lay in fourteen days after
being placed in their new home, in
eighteen da vs more there will be young
sters and in 128 days the first squabs
will be ready for market. This makes a
total of about 60 days from the time
you bought, the next squabs will be
ready in less than 48 days, as when the
first squabs were two weeks old the
birds are setting again. Suppose you se
lect the best two of the youngsters and
save them for breeders and sell the
other four, which will bring 75 cents a
pair, or $1.50. Out of this, money, let
the boy pay you 50 cents on his obli
gation.‘spend 50 cents for feed and blow
in the other 50 cents as he wants to.
Nothing appeals so much to a young
ster as having his own money. This
method will not only give him a per
sonal monetary interest in home, but
tend to teach him the^ ins and outs of
business.
The assurance that The Sunday
American and Georgian will help all
those who want to start in this new in
dustry is a guarantee that “failure will
be an unknown quantity. If you are
interested in any breed of pigeons, and
want information in regard to them, fill
out the coupon below and send it in,
being careful to write plainly and state
what breed you want information about:
