An obliging physician issued a certificate of
death—one that caused no unpleasant
comments.
In time the widow married again. She
continued her practices. Her second hus
band was a very quiet fellow of a remarkably
religious turn of mind. I was called in to
see her professionally; she had threatened
to shoot her husband and commit suicide.
She was almost an imbecile, due to tobacco,
liquor, and drugs, but, as I have previously
said, she was a very handsome, highly cul
tured woman a queenly woman when her
self, but a veritable she-devil when under
the influence of liquor and drugs. Fancy
a woman of that kind becoming a mother.
Passing from the drug addiction to to
bacco and liquor as sources of temptation
to the young physician, one needs to look
back but a very short distance to see an
immense amount of wreckage to be charged
to their account. Taken together they
seem to be two considerable factors in the
undoing of many physicians. Liquor and
tobacco travel hand in hand. This state
ment will no doubt be challenged by some
medical men; such at least has been my
experience. The men met with in general
practice in New York, w ho suffer from peri
odic attacks of dipsomania, are men who
smoke in the intervals. The men of this
class, in becoming fathers,* add to the
neurotics and degenerates of our time. The
latter in turn swell the criminal classes.
The total abstainer and the man who
avoids tobacco in any of its forms not only-
commands respect, but he gets the very best
out of the mental and physical equipment
that God has entrusted to him. The sense
of well-being and power to such a man is a
spring of perpetual enjoyment. In this con
nection let us recall the famous remark
attributed to Dr. Johnson, “I can abstain,
but cannot be moderate.”
In conclusion: Physicians, one and all,
must look forward to the time when they
will have to render an account of their
stewardship. Let the young physician
eschew all evil, even the appearance thereof.
Men of the right sort will not !et temptations
lead them astray’.
THE FAIL OF NAPOLEON
(Continued from page 4)
Any means was good enough to ruin Napo
leon and to destroy the new dynasty he had
created: either by a new’ and terrible war
which would cause all the mothers of
I Europe to weep again, or by a horrible decoy
of state designed to lure Maria Luisa down
the slippery ways of adultery.
If there is truth in the w hisperings of the I
time, it would seem that in order to divert
the rather light and giddy mind of Maria
Luisa from the thought of Napoleon, they
had placed her in the company of a certain!
I Baron Neipperg, a handsome young man
I who was an expert, not indeed in the con-'
|quest of empires, but of women! Whether
Ithis gossip is true or false, I do not know;
certain it is, however, that towards the mid-
idle of 1814, Maria Luisa showed a desire to
divide her time between the little kingdom
of Parma, which had been assigned to her,
by the Congress of Vienna, and her great |
consort on the island of Elba. But at the;
j beginning of 1815 she seemed to turn a deat
iear to the prayers of her husband, who with,
much insistence and many letters urged her'
I to return and wear the crown of France j
which he had reconquered with such mar-;
jvelous hardihood. Why? Because, unless
'the gossip of Vienna has calumniated her,
j the dalliance of the handsome Neipperg
! pleased her more than the greatness and the
glory of Bonaparte.
But Napleon did not yield. Abandoned 1
by everyone, he prepared himself to fight 1
the allied monarchs of Europe. If every’'
now and again his spirit was furrowed by!
the thunderbolts of discouragement, he
(showed no want of alacrity. Must we not
admire and pity this man from whom four
great states had resolved to exact the price
of his too great fortune and intelligence. J
In this supreme moment, Napoleon showed
what he was: a sublime being set between
two hostile worlds. Under the illusion that |
he could master them, he had set himself
between the two great forces that for three
centuries had struggled for the mastery of
the world: Authority and Liberty, Revolu
tion and Tradition, Republicanism and
Monarchy’. By temperament he was not
inclined to ruin or destroy Authority’, Tra- 1
dition, Monarchy: but rather to venerate
them, reinforce them, represent them. But
Liberty, Revolution, Republicanism had
made of the poor Corsican officer one of the
great of the earth. Uncertain and perplexed
all his li.'e, he tried to found a popular!
