Ray McNamara Gets Road
Record With Maxwell Car

and Indlanapolis, Ray MeNamara, in
a Maxwell touring car has just reg
istered a performance at which, It is

Detroit was maed in 8 hours and 58
minutes; the return trip In 10 hours
and 4% minutes. Running time for
the round trip—622 miles—was 19
hours and 47 minutes. Hetween start

minute elapsed.

At Indianapolis the driver snatched
& hursried luncheon and fliled the
gasoline tank-—his only stop in the
whaole trip. aDylight iasted half way
through the return trip. Then dark
ness fell and later there was fox.
The ~ar in which the run was made
s one of the first 1916 models turned
out at the hig Detroit plant and had
already been run more than 17,000
miles, Including one trip across the
continent. Recently it has been one
of several cars which has been run
ning under observation of the Max
well engineering department, to «-‘
termine the effects of indefinite road
abuss. Much of this running has
heen over the Detroitelndianapolis
course—a typieal country road with
plenty of hilis, rough going, sand
and mud
The route chosen for the tour In
cluded Ypsilanti, Tecumseh, Adrian
and Morencl, Mich.: PBryan and
Hicksville, Ohlo: Fort Wayne, Hunt
ington, Marion and Anderson, Ind.
MeNamara started with a definite
schedule calling for a southbound

Harry Cohen Makes Enviable
Record by Performance of a
Four Stock Car.

The Atlanta Studebaker driven In
the thousand.-mile rellability test, by
Harry Cohen, fnished its four-day
grind Thursday night with flying

miles per day for four days
Melrose, Mass., got greatest dis
tance of any one day, making 350
miles. A San Jose, Cal, car ran 343

A Detroit car made the best aver.
age speed of 41.2 miles per hour for
the last 500 miles. A Sale Lake City
car ran continuously through snow
from four to fifteen inches deep. All
the cars in the Minneapolis territory,
with chains on all wheels drove
through drenching rain in a heavy
gumbo and slippery roads under wa
ter. A Colorado-Spring car finished
the run in snowdrifts on Pike's Peak,
13,500 feet elevation

and will be given a road assignment
during the off season. Sisler holds a
mechanical engineer's degree, and Is
an enthusiastic motorist,

possible. When the company's engi
neers had developed the elght-cylin
der engine to the point where the
company could feel sure of Ita
ground. the most gigantic part of its
task was still to be ascomplished,

of equipment was inadequate for the
production of the new car. New ma
chinery., new tools and new fixtures
were necessary for almost every part
of the new car, Much of the existing
equipment was utilized through re
designing and rebullding. But, even
50, new equipment at & cost of more
than half a milllon dollars was in
stalled Thus it was imperative to
design. manufacture, Install and sys
tematize hundreds of new machines,
in order to réach a volume of produc
tion on a type of car entirely new
not only to the Cadillac, dbut to the
