there are numbers
of resorts where
it is not necessa
ry to equip one's
self with a costly
outfit of pole and
reel, a motor boat
and expensive
quarters in order
to get a cqamce at
the big fish.
A rowboat is
really better for
tarpon fishing
than a motor
boat, as the fish
can be more easily
handled and in
gome sections one
has only to walk
a few feet from
the hotel to be
right at the tar

An industry that is rapidly gaining
popularity in Florida and the South is
the growing of spineless cactus. It
has deyeloped that this product is in
comparable as a cattle and hog food.
The American Spineless Cactus Com
pany, of Jacksonville, Fla., tells in an |
interesting manner the results of ex-l
periments made with this product and
C. C. Redgrave, in an article in The
Florida Farmer and Homeseeker,
says: "If one-half that is said about
the food value of spineless cactus is
true no cattle raiser can afford to
pass it by.”
Acecording to the Jacksonville con
cern, cactus can be Erown success
fully along the coast and interior val
leys of Califérnia, Southern Arizona,
Texas, Louisiana’ Mississippl, Ala
bama, Georgia, South Carolina and
Florida as a perennial and any l‘{l
cultural portion of the United Sta es
as an annual plant, \
In hot, dry countries it ecan be
planted at any time of the year, but in
cold, rainy countries the plant should
be dried before planting. It will grow
better than anything else in the poor
est soll, |
It will grow as a perennial any
where with from 5 to 100 inches of
rainfall and where It does not freeze
over one Inch. In wet ground it
should be planted where the surplus
water will drain off. |
Fifty Tons Per Acre.
On good soil, well taken care of, it
will produce 50 tons per acre the first
year, 100 tons the second year, 200
tons the third yvear and 400 tons the
fourth year. and each year after that,
Your soil will do proportionately well.
It Is green all the year round and
can be pastured or harvested as need
ed. Furnishes a green, steculent
stock food all the year through.
It is the best food known for all
kinds of live stock, especially hogs,
and makes a perfectly balanced ra
tion for dairy cows and all other kinds
of stock.
Cactus will also produce a very val
uable frult up as high as 20 tons a
YOAr per acre.
Cattle, horses, hogs, poultry, in faet
all herbivorous animals, will show an
increase in condition.
One hundred slabs planted should
produce enough cuttings in one year
to plant an acre.
The following is from the United
States Plant Industry of Encinal,
Texas :

Green Cove Springs Once Believed
“Fountain of Eternal Youth” by
Spanish Explorers.
——— -
It was perhaps some rumor of the
virtues of Green Cove Springs that
gave rise to the notion current among
early Spanish explorers that there
was in Florida a fountain to bathe in.
which would insure perpetual yvouth
and beauty. While Ernest L. Case
well, who operates the Quisisana spa
and hotel at Green Cove Springs, Fla,
does not claim perpetual youth for
bathers in the spring, he does claim
the waters will cure rheumatism and
make the skin soft and bßeautiful.
“Quisisana,” the name of the hot»l,
is Italian and means “here is healtn.”
The resort was named after the fa
mous watering place on the Igland of
Capri, Italy. The Florida Quisisana
is a fireproof structure built in the ol!d
mission style. Vine-covered pergolas
appeal to every traveler,
In addition to t‘h:.waters and the
excellent service ahd cuisine at Qui
sisana, there is plenty of outdoor
sport. Golf and tennis are among the
outdoor pastimes. Plenty of quail are
to be found in the near-by woods,
Quisisana Spa and Hotel i a combl

with ideal environment.
PALMS RATES ARE MODERATE.
Golf, tennis, motoring, baseball,
fishing, boating, sailing and many
other outdoor sports are to bhe en-
Joyed bv the guests of Hotel Palms at
West Palms, ¥la. The hotel is lo
cated opposite the city's most beauti
ful park'and facgs Lake Worth. The
hotel itself has earned the title of
“Family Home" because of its serv
ice. West Palms is a place for those
of moderate means, although many
millionalres spend their winters there.
INVESTS $l9O, NOW IS RICH.
MONTGOMERY, MO., Jan. I.—Royden
Johnson, a former printer, has become
rich from SIBO invested In oil lands In
Oklahoma. He recently sold the land
for $14,000, retaining one-eighth inter
est in royalties, for which he now re
fuses $200,000,
carded. From 20 to 30 pounds of
cactus was fed each day to each pen,
or § to 7 1-2 pounds to each hog.
After 22 days, from May 30, 1913, to
June 22, 1913, the eight hogs showed
A net gain of 118 pounds. The net
gain per hog for the twenty days was
l:‘ 2-3 ;aoumlo. d.a n\;’cruo o;.tvo
thirds of a poun ofg per day.
Food for mllm
During the above test a thorough
bred Berkshire sow, with four suck
ling pigs, was put upon a diet of cac
tus and rolled barley. Through lack
of proper supply of milk, this saw had
lost several of her litter, and the re
malining four were In poor condition,
The sow responded quickly to the
eactus feed, giving a decided Increase
in flow of milk, the result of whlch‘
was shown in the rapld growth and
good condition of the suckling pigs.
The small pigs soon learned to like
the cactus and ate it greedily. |
The University of Arizona, after a
very eareful and exhaustive series of
experiments, has proven that without
any doubt whatever spineless actul
is rich In food value and that both its
leaves and frult are highly nutritious.
