‘ Matson on the Standard.
~_Andrew C. Matson, of Woburn, Mass.,
one of the best known and most suc
cessful Carneaux breeders in the East,
has t‘ho following to say in regard to
the Carneaux standard that is now in
the hands of several committ, look
ing toward a standard that Vm ac
cepted and recognized by all Carneaux
clubs. Mr. Matson u(-:
“l am very much interested in the
propou? Carneaux standard, and [ was
especially pleased to see that the In
ternational Carneaux Club and Dixla
Pigeon Assoclation will make an effort
to hnv|. t‘meb Ca{‘nnux standdrd to be
recogn y @ arneaux fanciers,
This u.‘vfiul is naeSed greatly if Car-
Neaux are to come to the front in the
plgoon world.
The standards we have to-day are
made to suit a few hreeders and their
birds. 1 trust we wiil get a standard
which pictures an ideal Carneaux, and
I make the following suggestions:
Color (dark red, bfl‘m. mahogany or
rlqg horse chestnut)- wnu
ndercolor cc!(:fhler )5 polpts.
o, fieusses otadeeros poi
Sres, Iris ( t orange) nts.
(l‘en (lmoot?.nd or pinkish red)-§
points,
Legs (red, clean, free from all stubs)
~4& polnts.
Type <(upright, not ecrouchy, broad
breast, not too short, like the Maltese;
neither too lour ke the runt, but a
medium) - 10 &o nts.
Preferred Welght (cocks, 20 to 23
ounces; hens, 19 to 22 ounces) 5§ points,
Head chlc and round, with & litle
fatness at back)—s points.
“These are the most important quall
ties In the Carneaux, and [ belleve al.
most everybody will agree with me that
& bird with all these good qualities
would be an ideal bird.” 1
UTILITY BIRDS IN THE SHOW. ‘
By C. 5. BURDEN, Hoganavilie, Ga,
Much has been written here of iate
regarding the standards now in discus
slon for the Carneau and for the ruies
and regulations that will govern the
shows of the romm*m in last
Sunday's issus Mr. Eggleston hit the
note when he jumped on the showing
that the fanciers were giving the utility
man. There are hundreds of bresders
as utility birds to every dozen of those
breading fancy or show birds, yet the
fanciems have ruled or gosverned the
shows that we have had and the utility
hreeder has had but Hille showing. What
inducement has he ever received to
place his blirds in comoetition In the
showroom® What interest can ke take
in the shows If given no showing™ If
there could be saome way 1o interest
the utility breeders the shows that are
now held over the country would treble
in sizs at the Arst show
I am sirvictly & utility bresder ard
have m:'mlod the shows of the Disie
figeon Association in cvery instance and
have never hesn rewarded for same, as
I have never been able 1o have a class
established for my birds. 1 have talked
with several of the best brasders «Mt{
W% have in the Biate, and they are sors
on the mAtter as well as myself. and if
we are to lend oar support 1o the show,
which would mean a better. a larger
show sach time and make the indus‘ry
larger, wa must have some showing
Suppose | as 3 utility bresder should
send & bird to the show, enter him as
A single bird in the class that we have
bad and win first on him What rmd
would that be 1o a utility breeder” Bup

something.
In assisting In formulating the rules
for the next show 1 ho‘» that you will

HOMERS BEST OF ALL.
By J. WALLACE WILLIAMS,
Ithaca, Texas.
For elght years the writer has studied
pract ¥y every breed, sxcept crosses,
and y fall under the same rule in re
gard to prolificness. The conclusion
reached Is not mere guesswork, but is
itn line with the gonclusions of other
‘breeders who have studied the facts re
grrdiess of what they were breeding.
_There is one breed that leads all
others. It is the nmbvbrudlnqruom

the homer that was once the fiying
type, but has been developed for squab
breeding rurpou-, They have been
developed into a broad-breasted bird as
lcompared with the original type. But
why does this lyro of homers lead all
'thr breeds as fast squabbers? It is
because they are the smallest of all
}M- in the squab-breeding classes. In
crease their size to that of a runt or
other large breeds and they will de
crease in breeding qualities according
1o their size. Decrease the sise of the
Carneau, Runt, Mondaine and othes
larges breeds to the size of the fiying
homer type, ,and If they are pure
breeds they will equal the homer in
prolificness. Of course, the homer has
many disadvantages which do not place
it above a bird of medium size in any
of the standard breeds. However, as 1o

large birds, all right. But, f birds are
wanted that will pay thelr way as squab

In any breed. Home will take Issus with

in any way destroy the facts that ae
