The killing of the five negroes and
the burning of negro lodge halls and

they are keeping out of contact with
the whites as much as possible,

ATLANTA, GA., SUNDAY, JANUAKY Z, 1916.
W. R. Hearst, in New York, Makes Speech Over
3,000 Miles of Telephone Wire Opening Los
Angeles Examiner’s Handsome New Home.
NEW YORK, Jan! I.—William Ran
dolph Hearst's Los Angeles Examiner
last night dedicated its new building
--the largest structure in the world
devoted solely to the publication of a
newspaper,
For the first time in history a dedi
catory speech was made across the
continent by long-distance telephone.
Mr. Hearst was seated in the library
of his home on Riverside Drive, in
this city, and he spoke over 3,600
miles of telephone wires to scores of
distinguished citizens of California
gathered in The Examiner offices.
"~ In the new building in Los Angeles
were M. I. [hmsen,. general manager
of The Examiner; the members of the
staff, Mayor Charles E. Sebastian,
President R. N. Bulla, of the Los An
geles Chamber of Commerce; Presi
dent W. E. Bush, of the Merchants and
Manufacturers’ Assoclation; President
W. W. Mines, of the Los Angeles
Realty Boardpand many other nota
bles.
Notables Join in Dedication.
With Mr. and Mrs. Hearst in their
home were United States Senator
James: A. O'Gorman, John Hays Ham
mond, president of the California So
clety in New York; Supreme Court
Justice and Mrs. Clarence J. Shearn,
Mrs. Phoebe A. Hearst, John O'Hara
Cosgrove, former president of the Cal-
Ifornia Society; Henry Varian, sec
retary of the California Soclety in
New York, and others,
Soon after midnight direct tele
phone connection with The Examiner
offices was established and Mr, Hearst
began his address. Connections had
been made with the office of The San
Francisco Examiner, where were Aas
sembled some of the leading citizens
of that eclty,
It was 9 o'clock in Los Angeles when
the exerclses of dedication began.
As amazing as was the entire un
dertaking itself was the distinctness
with which the voices of the speakers
could be heard across the broad ex
panse of mountains and plains. H.
