LONDON, Jan. 3.—The British liner, Glengyle, bound from
Yokohama for Genoa, has been sunk in the Mediteranean Sea by
a submarine.
The loss of life is believed to be heavy. Several hundred
Americans are reported to have been among the passengers on the
‘Glengyle. One hundred were picked up by other ships. :
The Glengyle was bigger than the Peninsular and Oriental
liner Persia. It displaced 9,000 tons. She was owned by McGregor,
Gow & Company, of Glasgow, and was one of the finest steamers in
the Oriental service. She was built in 1914
Reports that the Glengyle was destroyed near the spot whers
the Persia was torpedoed gave rise to the belief that both may have
been attacked by the same submarine
The heavy destruction to shipping in the Mediterranean indl
cates that the Tentonic Powers have a large fleet of underses boats
watching th steamer line in the Mediterranean. particularly near
the Suez Canal
