Under the abeve caption, %:. C. Stone,
editor of The Hampshire Advocate, of
Peoria, 111., who visited the hog and
cattle show held in Atlanta last fell, has
the following to say in his January is
sue:
“In_the month of November we made
our first visit to the btate of Georgia
when we attended the fair in Atlanta
at the time of the Hampshire sale,,
which was held on the new fair grounds|
of the Southeastern Fair Assoclation.
This fair, although miking its initial
o*wning. was quite successful in the ex
hibits which were put on. We werea not
able to examine these exhibits as care
fully as we would have done had we been
able to give them more time to iooking
at sights.
“We arrived about two days late on
account of taking with us quite a num
ber of buyers for the sale, as that was
our first interest. We had the privi
lege however of meeting our friend,
Jamesg K. Downing, who Is a co-opera
tive worker under the direction of the
TUnited States Government. Mr. Down
ing had charge of the Pig éluh Work,
as, judging from his exhibit, he is do
ing “more extensive work in the Pig

have ever met. Wae had the privilege
of looking over his exhibit of meats,
cured in a manner so that it will keep
\under the conditions that exist in Geor
‘gla, Well do we remember when Mr.
Downing used hjs testing needle to
‘sample the degree of perfection of those
long Georgia hams: how appetizing was
'the smell of the well-cured ham. \Ve‘
think without any thought of it being
‘taken as flattery that the curing process
‘used by Mr. Downing is flavor and odor
of perfect curing, that _he would be
‘more than a good competitor for the
large packing houses. His bacon seemed ‘
to %e as perfectly cured as the hams,
ang he was very energetic In cshowing
his exhibit and temng the visitors to
the fair how they could cure their meats
and how they could make more profit
from their Georgia soil by producing
more pigs than thev could by farming in
the way that they had been in the habit
of doing for years. A
“We also wish to call attention to
the faet that we have met Mr. Downing
at the Jowa State Fair and other shows,
Jooking up the best quality of hogs and
the best methods of caring for pigs of
different breeds and developing them
into the most perfect individuals. We

Better Stock; Increased Profits.
The raising of pure-bred pouitry has
of hlob{:dn ’rovm into one of the most
\profita and agreeable %nulu in
which any one may onugfi ere Is no
better investment than the poultry busi
ness at the present time
The demand for strictly first-class
birds always exceeds the suppiy, angd it
is & mistaken idea to begin with low
grade fowls and endeavor to improve
the stock. The best are by far the
most profitable and the cheapest in the
end, as much time s saved and it is pos
sible to get the benefit of the years of
o ot atudy the reliable 'breeder |
has spent in perfecting the stock. To
be sure, it costs more to start with the
best, but the additional cost is money
well invested in the long run.
One does not need to go into the
poultry business on & large scale. In
deeqd. it is not the best 'phn. for this
rrucuhr business is like all other
inds. 1t has its ups and downs and
experience counts for mueh. It s un
wise for a novice to attempt any kind
of A business on & large scale.
The way to succeed Is to begin with a
few fowls and let the hens make more
capital by multiplication of individuals.
Another good plan is to secure sittings
of eggs from & reliable breeder from
fowls which are considered hardy and
quick of growth. With the peeping of
the chicks interest awakens to a degree
not felt before. In either way one in
vests less capital to risk at the start,
learns more every month, and will get
his share of prosperity in a slow but
sure way.
I have had the pleasure of starti
a number of persons who have begun
this manner and in nearly every case
where there was Interest and where
business methods in poultry keeping
weore used there was success beyond ex
pectation. To beginners I alwayvs advise
the reading of leading poultry literature,
for thus one gains splendid ideas and
facts from the exrerience of others.
When well established with good fowls,
be sure to show the birds and adflvertise.
Such practices will insure pmsrrfl_v for
the poultryman and get him into a good
paving business very £oon, if he hes the
quality in his stock sufficient to win and
lay the foundation for his business.
With good foundation stock it will be
much less difficult to please customers
and to give each and every one the
worth of their money. A pleased cus
tomer is a standing advertisement. The
highest possible quality i the corner
stone to success. Prosperity in this in
dustry depends upon integrity and hon
esty of the breeder, along with the
quality of stock sent out.
There are a number of leu‘llns varie
ties nf poultry that are in good demand,
but it is well to consider carefully what
the future of a breed is likely to be
before making a selection.
Naturally, as originator of the Tar
tridge Plvmouth Rocks 1 would suggest
thig brand-new breed to any one who
wishes to combine profit with pleasure
in the poultry business.
At the present time beginners in poul
try have ouite the advantage over ‘‘old
timers.” for now whatever breed of
fancy fowls you wish to select, you will
find fanclers from whom you can buy
birds of the highest type—fanciers who,
during long vears. by careful delection
and with a definite aim in view have
produced specimens as nearly perfect as
possible.
No bird ever attained a perfect score,
vet there are manv scoring near to the
hundred mark, well up in the nineties.
These are the results of careful mating,
