Left in the dark, popular fancy
' has instantly imagined the worst
and leaped to the most dramatic
conclusions. Because the Kalser
is known to have had an abscess
of the middle ear when a boy, at
the same time that he lost most
of the bone of his right arm, he
has been declared to have bindge
webentzrundung of the middle ear,
threatening the brain, which
ought to be fatal to anybody.
Then, on the other hand, re
membering that his kindly and
noble father, whose death can
never sufficlently be regretted,
died of cancer of the throat and
the Kaiser has twice during his
lifetime suffered from attacks of
hoarseness, the cellulitis is confi
dently declared to be caused by,

cancer of the throat.
Indeed, so seriously have these
rumors been taken that the im
perial physicians have found it
necessary to formally and explic

WISER TO BE FRANK,
Really it would have been wiser
and better, unless the malady is
of such desperate und menacing
character that reasons of state
demand its concealment as long
as possible, to have said plain'y
and frankly just Where the cellu

the danger to be reasonably ex

some part of the skin would have
produced less panic at home than
the rumors which are now flying
about.
Only one positive sliver of fact
can be extracted from the balloon
. announcement, and that i{s that
the inflammation wherever it is
and from whatever cause has
“got under the skin,” as we say.
Connective tissue has one sin
gular peculiarity, @Although it is
everywhere in the body it never at
any point reaches the surface,
either internally or externally.
Any Inflammation whl’h reaches
it must have penetrated through
either our outer skin sheet, epithe
llum, or our inner mucous lining,

as less power of resistance and is
