Hats Off to the Humble Hen
The good old hen, the modest, the
indomitable, the bun{ hen-—-she of the
red comb—to her would 1 write an aposy
trophe! More paradoxes could be wrltY;
tén of her than of any domestic anima
on'the farm. She earns more in pro
portion to ®er cost and is given less
credit than the horse, the cow, the sheep
or pig. She works harder, gets up ear
lier, attends to her own business bet
ter, while less thought is given to hap
comfort than to any animal on the farm.
She picks up what nothing else wants
and what no animal would find.. She
pays in cashable product each day for
what she picked up the day befores
ler contributions to the breakfast table
and to the credit side of the Frocery
bill are regularly made, for which she
receives scant thanks, yet she sings and
cackles and goes uncomplainingly on her
wng'. She deserves more than she gets,
and she gets what she wants by going
after it. God bless the humble hen—she
}:xong of man’'s best and most neglected
ends.

SUCCESS WITH BABY CHICKS.
Thousands of beginners in poultry
raising, as well many experienced
breeders, have fofnd that the hardest
Froblem after hatching or buying chicks
S to make them live through the first
ten days. Mlnly hundreds o’ thousands
of chicks are lost each season during
the first critical period because of earg
less and wrong feeding. Success w%h
the chicks depends entirely upon the
person “behind the gun,” for to be suc
cessful in brooding and feeding young
chicks one must not be careless as to
details, haphazard in feeding or negli
gent about sanitation, &
The old saying, ““A bird 'in the hand
is worth two in the shell,” is true
enough, as the purchase of day-old
chicks has many advantages and espe
clally for the govlco. over the method
of buying eggs ind hatching them your
self. But many breeders would rather
buy eggs from a reliable poultryman,
knowing exactly what they are buying,
and hatch the chicks themselves, there
:).v deriving pleasure from poultry rais

want to suggest caution to all prospec
tive buyers. Do not buy the very cheap
est, but at the same tima don’t pay an
exorbitant price. In baby chicks, as
in most other things, it pays to pay a
little more and get a standard article.
What you want, too, is chicks with vi
tality, ‘chicks that will grow into strong,
healthy birds. The ‘word ‘‘vitality” is
the keynote In success with chicka.
The last thlnfi a chick does before
pipping the shell and hatching is to
swallow or absorb the yolk of the egg.
This is nature's way, and in the yolk of
the e%g nature has provided sufficient
nourishment to last the chick farty
eight hours, so that no food should be
given for that length of time. That's
the reason why day-old chicks can bhe
shipped such distances in good condi
tion and why safe delivery can be guar
anteed for a thousand miles from the
hatchery.
Before your chicks arrive, or even it
{ou hateh them yourself, have your
rooder disinfected, ready and running
at the proper temperature of 90 degrees,
although some have them several de
grees warmer. Get your chicks under
warm hover as soon as possible, and if

First Feeding Importan ‘»i
After being placed in the brooder .
should have plenty of fresh water, ¥
they will want something to drink as '
well as eat. The first feed should con- "
sist of bread crumbs and the yolk oz‘
hard-boiled egg crumbled together, a '
good commercial dry milk mash, or g
of the reliable baby chick foods now
vertised. This should be their feed y
at least four or five days when they can
be given any good commercial chicie
feed. In the meantime, too, you can
give them some pln-heaJ grit and covey
the bottom of the brooder with fineg
clean sand. T
When ten days old chicks can be given.
a little cracked corn and wheat or &
mash composed of equal parts of corn
meal and bran with a littla charcoal
and grit added. And in a few days a
little beef scrap finely sifted can be
added to the mash.
' Do not overfeed the chicks, and it is
Ibest, to feed oftener and not so much
at one time. ;
Feed on a bare board thg first twa "
days., The third and fourth days .scat
ter part of the feed, on the board and’
the rest of it in the litter and maka
your chicks work for it, Always spread
or scatter the food enough so that all
the chicks will be able to get what thev
need, otherwise the weak and timid
ones will go hungry.
A little chick will not develop proper
ly without exercise. The brooder should
be roomy enough to avoid the danger of
crowding, and an apartment strewn
with straw should be attached to the
brooder or hover where the chicks can
scratch and run about freely, as this
promotes growth and health, &
There are numerous suggestions as to
how best to feed broods develop little
chicks, but by following these general
directions, even the beginner should
have success.—Exchange, +
