Hats Off to the Humble Hen
The good old hen, the modest, the
indomitable, the busy hen—she of the
red comb—to her would I write an apos
trophe! More paradoxes could be writ
ten of her than of any domestic animal
on the farm. She earns more in pro
portion to her cost and is given less
credit than the horse, the cow, the sheep
or pig. She works harder, gets up ear
lier, attends to her own business bet
ter, while less thought Js given to hey
comfort than to any animal on the farm.
She picks*up what nothing else wants
and what no animal would find.. She
pays in cashable product each day for
what she picked up the day before:
Her contributions to the breakfast table
and to the credit side of the Frocery
bill are regularly made, for which she
receives scant thanks, yet she sings and
cackles and goes uncomplainingly on her
wag'. She deserves more than she gets,
and she gets what she wants by going
after it. God bless the humble hen-—shg
is one of man's best and most neglected
friends.
Fifty hens paying a net profit of sl.s¢
each save $75 from going on the char%e
account at the store for frrocer!en. t
does not follow from this that one
thousand hens would ;my a profit of 81,
500, however. The $75 may mean just
about that much added to the net prof
its of the farm by reason of the fact
that the care and feed of the flock
was purely incidental to the operations
of the farm, and really represented no
additional cost for labor or feed.
The cow, t? glg and the hen, the in
domitable trio that has saved the farm
to many a homesteader, of these not the
least is the humble hen.-—D. E. Wil
lard, Northern Pacific Railway Develop.

| SUCCESS WITH BABY CHICKS.
_ Thousgnds of beginners in poultry
raising, as well as many experienced
breeders, have found that the hardest
problem after hatchigg or bßuying chicks
s to make them live through the first
ten days. Many hundreds of thousands
of chicks are lost each season during
the first critical period because of care
less and wrong feeding. Success with
the chicks depends entirely upon the
person ‘“‘behind the gun,” for toqbo sucs
‘cesaful in brooding and feeding young
chicks one must not be careless as to
details, haphazard in feeding or negli
gent about sanitation,
The old saying, “A bird in the hand
is worth two in the shell,” is true
\enough. as the purchase of day-old
chicks has many advantages and espe
clally for the novice, over the method
of buying eggs and hatching them your
self. But many breeders would rather
buy eggs from a reliable poultryman,
knowing exactly what they are buying,
and hatch the chicks themselves, there
‘by deriving pleasure from poultry rais
ing.

want to suggest caution te all prospec-‘
tivg buyers. Do not buy the very cheap
est, but at the same time don't pay an
exorbitant price. In baby chicks, as
in most other things, it pays to pay a
little more and get a standard article,
What you want, too, i 8 chicks with vi
tality, chicks that will grow into strong,
healthy birds. The word ‘‘vitality” is
the keynote in success with chicks.
The last thinq a chick does before
pipping, the shell and hatching is to
swallow or absorb the yolk of the egg.
This is nature’s way, and in the yolk of
the e%x nature has provided sufficient
nourishment to last the chick fortg
eight hours so that no food should be
given for that length of time. That's
the reason why day-old chicks can be
shipped such distances in good condi
tion nmlY why safe delivery can be guar
anteed for a thousand miles from the
hatchery.
Before your chicks arrive, or even if
you hatch them yourself, have your
brooder disinfected, ready and running
at the proper temperature of 90 defirees,
although some have them several de
grees warmer. Get your chicks under
warm hover as soon as possible, and if

First Feeding Importa X
After being placed in the brooder
should have plenty of fresh water, as,
they will want something to drink as:
well as eat. The first feed should j= bt
sist of bread crumbs and the yolk of:
hard-boiled e{g crumbled together, a
good commercial dry milk mus:. or any
of the reliable baby chick foods now 4
vertised. This should be their feed X
at least four or five days when they ma'
be given any good commercial chicikk
feed. In the meantime, too, you ot%
give them some pln-head grit and ;
the bottom of the brooder with finey
clean sand. 5
When ten days old chicks can be givem,
a little cracked corn and wheat or &,
mash composed of equal parts of corm,
‘meal and bran with a little charcoal
and grit added. And in a few days &,
little beef scrap finely sifted can be,
added to the mash, ¥
Do not overfeed the chicks, and it Is,
best to feed oftener and not so muclf
- at one time, i
Feed on a bare hoard the first twe
days. The third and fourth days scat:,
ter part of the feed on the board and.
the rest of it in the litter and maké
your chicks work for it. Always spread,
or scatter the food enough so that alls
the chicks will be able to get what thev.
need, otherwige the weak and timid:
ones will go hungry. "
A little chick will not develop proper
ly without exercise. The brooder should*
be roomy enough to avoid the danger of*
crowding, and an apartment strewn\'
with straw should be attached to the'
brooder or hover where the chicks can'
scratch and run about freely, as thisg'
promotes growth and health, ' i
There are numerous suggestions as to’
how best to feed broods develop little
chicks, but by following these general
directions, even the beginner should
have success,—Exchange.
