Busiest Opera Day
By POLLY PEACHTREE.
ELi, Wednesday was the
W fullest day of opera week.
(No couble meaning at
tached to the use of the adjective
describing the day, 1 assure you.)
With the barbeiue at Druid Hills,
the tea-dance al the Driving Club
and the evening performance and
the . suprer-dance afterward,
surely “a pleasant time was had
by alll”
Caruso was among those pres
ent at each affair, unless it was
the opera in the evening. I looked
for him to’ describe his costume,
which the news reporters have

attracted his curiosity. Quickly
his companion gathered the little
dark red sweet-smelling buds and,
rolling them into a ball, asked
Caruso for his handkerchief. .He
produced a lovely one, of tan and
white linen, and the ‘“sweet
shrubs” were tied up in a knot at
one end, the famous tenor carry-
Ing them around in close prox
imity to his nose—just as South
ern schoolgirls do, every spring—
for the rem.inder of the day,
i It was not the fault of Amato
that we heard no singing from
the stars yesterday. He was
- called upon so insistently that
finally he said: “All right, T will
sing In .a quartet.” Martinell{
- consented to be one-fourth of the
quartet, but no soprano was
~ forthcoming. Pretty Edith Mason
: was there. adorable to behold in a
L Tore sweater and rose sport hat
« and white skirt. But she was
‘-saving her voice for “La Sonnam

' take her place. This ruse of Am
