Dr. J. Sprole Lyon, pastor of the
First Preshyterian Church, Thursaay
received news of the death In Doug
‘lns, Ga., of Dr. Edward O. Guerrant,
78, of Wilmore, Ky., one of the most
distinguished ministers in the South
ern Presbyterian Church. Dr, Guer
rant was at the home of his daughter,
in Douglag, at the time of his death,
he having stopped over there on his
way to Kentucky from his winteri
home in Florida. The body will be%
taken Thursday afternoon to Ken
tucky for the funeral.
Dr. Guerrant was a brilllant pulplt
orator and a striking figure in the

Kentucky, and for a long while was a
prominent physician. He entered the
ministry in 1875, and held a number
of pastorates in Kentucky, including
the First Presbyterian Church, of
Louisville, the former pastorate of
Dr. Lyon, He later was called to
evangelistic work in Kentucky, and
organized the “American Inland Mis
sion,” devoting his energies to the up
lift of the mountain classes: He
wrote several books dealing withithe
spread of the gospel In the moun
tains and the situation there gen

Dr. Guerrant was a Confederate vet
eran, having won a brilllant record
as a soldier as & member of John
Morgan’s famous command. :

funeral of J. A. Paten, president of the
Chattanoga Medicine Company, who
died In Chlcago yesterday morninrr. fol
lowing an operation, will be held here
tomorrow afternoon. The body arrived

Simmons, blazing the way for the

affairs the Senator declared, after a

paredness, nor for war, but for
peace,” and that keeping this country
at peace in this world-made mael
strom of war is an achievement

Miss Mnattis Roberts, 18-year-old

WAYCROSS, April Zi.—lnvestiga
tion is being made into thw murder
of M. Orovitz, a prominent Jewish
merchant of Waycross, formerly a
resldent of Unadilla, who dled .this
morning at the King's Daughters’
Hospital without regaining con
sclousness after being attacked late
Wednesday in one of his stores here.
His head was badly battered, probably
with a plistol.
Orovitz was known as a quiet and
conservative business fnan and as far
as officers know had no trouble of
any kind in his business dealings,
He came here five vears ago and had
been very successful. He was found
in the back of higs Thomas street
store In a pool of blood. The attack
apparently was made about 4 o'clock.
It was an hour later that he was dis
covered. His skull was fractured by
one of the blows delivered by his un
known assallant. Investigation by
the police has caused the robbervy
theory to be abandoned Neither
city nor county officers have made
any arrests as yvet, but it {s under
stood developments are expected
within the next twelve hours.
